Več stoletij dolga izraba svinčene rude je v Zgornje Mežiški dolini pustila neizbrisen pečat. Rudniki svinca in cinka v Mežici so s pridobivanjem svinčene rude področje zgornje Mežiške doline spremenili v onesnaženo okolje z visoko vsebnostjo svinčenega prahu v zraku in tleh.

The several centuries practiced use of lead ore in the upper part of Mežiška dolina has left an indelible mark. Lead and zinc ore mining has changed the upper part of the valley and transformed it into a polluted area with high levels of leaden dust in the air and soil. Semič, izvir Krupe: ekološka katastrofa pred trinajstimi leti; semiška Iskra je v reko spuščala strupeni PCB. Po prepovedi izpustov in opustitvi nevarne industrije se je stanje po dolgih letih izboljšalo. Izvir Krupe in reko so razglasili za naravni spomenik; izvir, izjava Mira Ivanovič, Zavod za varstvo ABSEC, Krupa, zloženka.
Thirteen years ago, an ecological disaster struck the municipality of Semič. At the source of the Krupa River, toxic PCB traces were detected, which were released into it by the Iskra Company. After the emission of toxic waste into the environment was prohibited and the production of dangerous products was stopped, the situation finally improved. The source of the Krupa River and the river itself were declared a natural monument. A statement by Mira Ivanovič from the Institute of ABSEC is presented in the clip.

Improvement to the Krupa River in Bela Krajina after the long-lasting consequences of environmental disasters due to industrial pollution.

Expert consultation convened by Dr. Leo Šešerko, vice president of the Executive Council of the Republic of Slovenia and a member of the Green Party of Slovenia, was called upon to come up with a solution in order to overcome the effects of massive industrial pollution. Up until the mid-eighties, the Iskra Company was releasing toxic chemicals into the natural environment of the Krupa River. The President of the Greens of Slovenia Dr. Dušan Plut and also Anton Farazinc from the University Institute for Health and Social Care make a statement regarding the issue at hand.

PCB-ji so prišli v reko preko odpadnih vod Semiške tovarne in odpadnih izdelkov.
The ecological disaster which took place at the source of the Krupa River (municipality of Semič) is considered as one of the greatest environmental contaminations with toxic PCBs (Polychlorinated biphenyls). In the vicinity of the now former capacitors production plant of Iskra Semič, the River Krupa was heavily polluted, as discovered when wanting to use it as a source for regional water supply. PCBs entered the river through wastewater and waste products from the Semič factory Iskra. Production of PCBs lasted until 1983, when the Company changed the production. Recent research in this area has shown that PCBs are still present in specific products (eggs, cow's milk, nuts ...), but PCB contamination of the air is no longer a problem. As for the river - the Krupa remains the most polluted river of PCB toxins in the world. Given that in our area chlorinated herbicides and pesticides or any kind of other products containing PCB remains, are no longer in use, a continuing risk of environmental pollution by PCB remains a great danger as it is still present in not just a handful of the transformers and capacitors made by the Company.
Presented video was made after revelations of the catastrophic environmental pollution. Tone Poljšak, Deputy Chairman of the Republican Committee for environmental protection and regulation of traffic and Dr. Albin Pečaver from the Institute of Forensic Medicine and Hygiene gave their statements regarding the issue.

The findings presented from spatio-sociological perspective are intended to contribute to a more successful solving of questions concerning the order and disorder in (urban) space. This is grounded ...in the wider spread of the use of ICT as well as in terms of the concrete experiences gained in the city of Koper and in the coastal area of the Slovenian Istria. The author is disclosing the dual nature of ICT: a) as an efficient mean for preventing, disclosing andsanctioning of illegal acting (interventions) in space and b) as a new way of disturbing interference in the life of people in public and private spaces, which threatens the values such as identity of the city, natural and cultural heritage and safety of the inhabitants. With higher awareness about this our managing power would increase to the benefit of the quality of living and to conviviality of the residents both in short-term and in long-term perspectives.
