The Branch Library for Medical History of the Medical University of Vienna containing over half a million items is the largest library for medical history in Austria. Next to current literature about ...medical history the library stocks nine completed historical libraries with books out of six centuries (15–20 century) in its location at the Josephinum. The article describes these nine libraries and presents a highlight of every collection.
We experience individual differences in pain and sensitivity to analgesics clinically. Genetic factors are known to influence individual difference. Polymorphisms in the human OPRM1 gene, which ...encodes the μ-opioid receptors, may be associated with the clinical effects of opioid analgesics. The purpose of this study was to determine whether any of the 5 common single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the OPRM1 gene could affect the antinociceptive effect of fentanyl. Fentanyl was less effective in subjects with the G allele of the OPRM1 A118G SNP than in those with the A allele, and subjects with the G allele required more fentanyl for adequate postoperative pain control than those with the A allele. In the future, identifying SNPs might give us information to modulate the analgesic dosage of opioid individually for better pain control. Factors underlying individual differences in sensitivity to pain other than genetic factors may include environmental and psychological factors. We therefore examined the effects of preoperative anxiety on the analgesic efficacy of fentanyl in patients undergoing sagittal split mandibular osteotomy (SSMO). From among the patients enrolled in the study, 60 patients (male/female: 18/42, age: 24.6 ± 6.7 years) who gave informed consent were examined for correlations between preoperative trait/state anxiety, as measured by the state-trait anxiety inventory (STAI) on the day before surgery, and postoperative consumption of patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) fentanyl and visual analog scale (VAS) assessment by patients. Levels of trait and state anxieties measured by the STAI were correlated with neither the consumption of PCA fentanyl nor postoperative VAS assessment. These findings suggest that psychological factors are unlikely to affect postoperative pain or the use of analgesics.
3D printing of various polymers has attracted great attention and developed rapidly in recent years. Digital light processing (DLP) has recently emerged as a fast growing 3D printing technique due to ...its high resolution and high speed. However, the lack of printable high-performance materials limits its broad applications. In addition, with the increasing adoption of DLP 3D printing, the efficient recycling of printed thermosetting materials is highly desired. Herein, we proposed a two-stage curing approach involving dynamic reactions by using the acrylate-epoxy hybrid resin for the recyclable DLP 3D printing of high-performance thermosetting polymers. Bond exchange reactions (BERs) could establish covalent bonds between the acrylate network and the epoxy network, thus partially triggering the copolymerization. The resulting new polymers exhibited excellent mechanical properties. A small-molecule assisted BER method was then used to efficiently depolymerize the thermosetting printed parts into soluble oligomers, which were formulated with fresh photopolymers for the next round of printing. The reprinted samples still showed good mechanical properties comparable to the virgin ones. In addition, the new polymers demonstrated potential applications in 4D printing of smart actuators. This work opens a novel avenue for green manufacturing technologies.

This paper describes the structure and consistency of Emilio Artom’s miscellany, which represents a documental patrimony of historical relevance and one of the most interesting collections of ...offprints held in the Special Mathematical Library at the Department of Mathematics ‘G. Peano’ of the University of Turin.
This volume collects the publications of Prof. Antonio Melis, Dean of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, on the occasion of his 93rd birthday. The anastatic reprint of the papers, ...which cover the period from 1955 to 1999, is part of the series of other publications that UNICApress has promoted for the 400th anniversary from the founding of the University of Cagliari. Research in the field of Mathematical Physics and the teaching of Rational Mechanics at the Faculties of Sciences and Engineering are where Professor Melis' passion for Mathematics and teaching came to life.

The present article identifies and discusses some of the books and scientific articles that played important roles in the development of the periodic law, before Mendeleev published his Periodic ...System in 1869. For each book, information is given about the edition in which the discovery was made, and for each scientific article, information is given about the form in which it was issued, such as whether offprints were printed in addition to the journal appearance. Some observations of interest to book collectors are included, such as assessments of the availability of these documents on the rare book market. This paper may also be of use to those who wish to learn about (or to teach) the history of the periodic law from the original documents that first announced important advances toward its creation.
