The prevalence and impact of chronic pain in individuals worldwide necessitate effective management strategies. This narrative review specifically aims to assess the effectiveness of neurofeedback, ...an emerging non-pharmacological intervention, on the management of chronic pain. The methodology adopted for this review involves a meticulous search across various scientific databases. The search was designed to capture a broad range of studies related to neurofeedback and chronic pain management. To ensure the quality and relevance of the included studies, strict inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied. These criteria focused on the study design, population, intervention type, and reported outcomes. The review synthesizes the findings from a diverse array of studies, including randomized controlled trials, observational studies, and case reports. Key aspects evaluated include the types of neurofeedback used (such as EEG biofeedback), the various chronic pain conditions addressed (like fibromyalgia, neuropathic pain, and migraines), and the methodologies employed in these studies. The review highlights the underlying mechanisms by which neurofeedback may influence pain perception and management, exploring theories related to neural plasticity, pain modulation, and psychological factors. The results of the review reveal a positive correlation between neurofeedback interventions and improved pain management. Several studies report significant reductions on pain intensity, improved quality of life, and decreased reliance on medication following neurofeedback therapy. The review also notes variations in the effectiveness of different neurofeedback protocols and individual responses to treatment. Despite the promising results, the conclusion of the review emphasizes the need for further research. It calls for larger, well-designed clinical trials to validate the findings, to understand the long-term implications of neurofeedback therapy, and to optimize treatment protocols for individual patients.
Cybersickness (CS) is one of the challenges that has hindered the widespread adoption of Virtual Reality (VR). Consequently, researchers continue to explore novel means to mitigate the undesirable ...effects associated with this affliction, one that may require a combination of remedies as opposed to a solitary stratagem. Inspired by research probing into the use of distractions as a means to control pain, we investigated the efficacy of this countermeasure against CS, studying how the introduction of temporally time-gated distractions affects this malady during a virtual experience featuring active exploration. Downstream of this, we studied how other aspects of the VR experience are affected by this intervention. We discuss the results of a between-subjects study manipulating the presence, sensory modality, and nature of periodic and short-lived (5-12 seconds) distractor stimuli across four experimental conditions: 1) no-distractors (ND); 2) auditory distractors (AD); 3) visual distractors (VD); 4) cognitive distractors (CD). Two of these conditions (VD and AD) formed a yoked control design wherein every matched pair of 'seers' and 'hearers' was periodically exposed to distractors that were identical in terms of content, temporality, duration, and sequence. In the CD condition, each participant had to periodically perform a 2-back working memory task, the duration and temporality of which was matched to distractors presented in each matched pair of the yoked conditions. These three conditions were compared to a baseline control group featuring no distractions. Results indicated that the reported sickness levels were lower in all three distraction groups in comparison to the control group. The intervention also increased the amount of time users were able to endure the VR simulation and avoided causing detriments to spatial memory and virtual travel efficiency. Overall, it appears that it may be possible to make users less consciously aware and bothered by the symptoms of CS, thereby reducing its perceived severity.
Introduction: Limited mobility and pain in the cervical spine affect 50% of the population, leading to disability and a reduction in quality of life. It is important to use effective forms of ...therapy. One of them, enjoying growing popularity, is deep tissue massage, the stability of which requires confirmation in scientific research.
Research objective: The aim of the study was to investigate how a single deep tissue massage therapy aimed at suboccipital muscles reduces pain and improves the range of motion in the cervical spine and how long the improvement lasts.
Research materials and methods: The study participants included 41 people aged 20-34. The respondents were randomly divided into 2 groups: study (21 people) and control (20 people). The subjects completed a questionnaire consisting of 14 questions and were subjected to 2 tests for evaluating cervical spine stability: the covering membrane test and the anterior occipital membrane test. Then, the measurements of pain on the VAS scale (0-10) and the range of cervical mobility were collected. Measurements were taken before, immediately after, as well as 2 and 4 weeks following the therapeutic intervention. The therapy in the study group consisted of a single, 10-minute relaxation session of the sub-occipital muscles. In the control group, cervical spine traction, lasting 30 seconds, was performed 3 times.
Results: In the study group, the pain decreased statistically significantly (p<0.05), before the therapy it totalled 4.33 ± 1.49, while after the therapy, its value decreased to 2.05 ± 0.86 and lasted up to 2 weeks after the massage – 2.67 ± 1.49. In the control group, the pain level before the therapy was 4.25 ± 0.76, and following the therapy, it decreased to 3 ± 0.95 and then increased to the mean value of 4 ± 1 (after 2 weeks). On average, the level equalled 4.25 ± 0.76 (after 4 weeks). In the study group, the range of flexion motion was, on average, 3.24 ± 1.00 cm, extension, mean 6.90 ± 1.14 cm, lateral flexion to the left, on avg. 4.76 ± 0.62, to the right on avg. 4.90 ± 1.04 cm, left rotation on avg. 8.43 ± 0.81, and right rotation on avg., 8.19 ± 1.08 cm. After deep tissue massage therapy, the results differed from the range of motion results obtained in the control group: flexion totalled 5.67 ± 0.48 cm immediately after therapy and 4.90 ± 1.34 cm 2 weeks post-intervention, extension 8.57 ± 0.87 cm immediately after therapy and 7.62 ± 1.47 cm 2 weeks after therapy, and finally, left lateral flexion 5.52 ± 0.81 directly following the therapy and 5.43 ± 0.93 cm 2 weeks after therapy.
Conclusions: 1. Single-session deep tissue massage therapy significantly reduces pain and increases range of motion in the cervical spine. 2. The effects last up to 2 weeks following the therapy.
Application of dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) is often used to induce experimental colitis. Current state of the art is to refrain from the use of analgesics due to their possible interaction with the ...model. However, the use of analgesics would be beneficial to reduce the overall constraint imposed on the animals. Here, we analyzed the effect of the analgesics Dafalgan (paracetamol), Tramal (tramadol) and Novalgin (metamizole) on DSS-induced colitis. To study the effect of those analgesics in colitis mouse models, acute and chronic colitis was induced in female C57BL6 mice by DSS administration in the drinking water. Analgesics were added to the drinking water on days four to seven (acute colitis) or on days six to nine of each DSS cycle (chronic colitis). Tramadol and paracetamol had minor effects on colitis severity. Tramadol reduced water uptake and activity levels slightly, while mice receiving paracetamol presented with a better overall appearance. Metamizole, however, significantly reduced water uptake, resulting in pronounced weight loss. In conclusion, our experiments show that tramadol and paracetamol are viable options for the use in DSS-induced colitis models. However, paracetamol seems to be slightly more favorable since it promoted the overall wellbeing of the animals upon DSS administration without interfering with typical readouts of colitis severity.
This study aimed to determine the effect of Binaural Beats(BB)on feeling of pain, and patient comfort during colonoscopy without sedation.
It is a randomized, controlled, double-blind procedural ...study of 115 patients that underwent colonoscopy without sedation. The patients were randomly assigned into the experimental group (n = 42) and the control group (n = 48) that were given BB starting 5 min before and continuing until the end of the colonoscopy procedure without any intervention other than routine nursing care. Measures of the state of anxiety (VAS-Anxiety scale) administered before the procedure, and measures of feeling of pain (Visual Analogue scale VAS-pain), Satisfactory and Willingness to repeat the procedure as Likert scales were also collected soon after the colonoscopy procedure.
Feeling of pain was lower and scores of the level of comfort were higher in the experimental group when compared to the control group (p < 0.05).
BB is an effective and safe method for reducing pain and improving patient comfort in cases undergoing colonoscopy without sedation. Since BB method is a non-pharmacological, non-invasive, inexpensive and simple method without any side effects, it may be used to reduce the feeling of pain and discomfort for non-sedated patients undergoing colonoscopy.
•Colonoscopy is an essential investigation associated with pain, anxiety and discomfort.•Binaural Beats intervention can reduce the level of pain and discomfort during colonoscopy without sedation.•The use of this simple and safe method could reduce the need for sedation for colonoscopy.

Objective
To estimate the relative efficacy of pharmacological therapies for the treatment of postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), multiple sclerosis (MS)‐related pain, posttraumatic pain, central ...poststroke pain (CPSP) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)‐related neuropathic pain (NeP).
Methods
This systematic review (through June 2011) identified randomised, controlled trials of treatments for these conditions. Bayesian mixed treatment comparison (MTC) methods were used to determine the relative efficacy and safety among the treatments within each pain condition.
Results
Fifty studies were identified: 33 PHN, 2 MS‐related pain, 3 CPSP, 3 posttraumatic pain and 9 HIV‐related NeP. Data from 28 PHN studies including 21 interventions and 4317 patients were included into the PHN MTC. Of treatments studied in ≥ 50 patients, opioids had the greatest mean pain reduction of −1.70 vs. placebo on an 11‐point numeric rating scale. Pregabalin ≥ 300 mg/day was most effective for ≥ 30% and ≥ 50% pain reduction relative risk (RR) vs. placebo = 2.44 and 2.13, respectively. Data identified for MS‐related pain, CPSP, posttraumatic pain and HIV‐related NeP were sparse; only 7 of 17 studies had ≥ 50 patients. Adverse events (AEs) and discontinuations for most treatments were not significantly greater than placebo except in PHN, where 8 of 12 treatments had higher risks of AEs compared with placebo and tricyclic antidepressants and opioids had higher risk of discontinuation compared with placebo.
Conclusions
Guideline‐recommended treatments for PHN were more effective than placebo on the pain NRS and for ≥ 30% and ≥ 50% pain reduction. Although guidelines exist for the management of less common NeP conditions, little published evidence supports them. These results highlight the need for additional evaluations and more complete reporting of outcomes to help guide physicians' treatment selections.
Objectives
To evaluate the advantages of adding acupuncture to standard postoperative pain management for open radical prostatectomy (RP).
Materials and methods
A randomized controlled trial (1:1:1) ...comparing routine postoperative analgesic care (control CON) vs the addition of press tack needle acupuncture (ACU) or press tack placebo acupressure (SHAM) for pain management after open RP was performed. A total of 126 patients were enrolled between February 2020 and April 2021. After open RP, the CON group received standard postoperative analgesia, the ACU group received long‐term acupuncture with press tacks at specific points (P‐6, Shenmen and SP‐6) along with standard analgesia, and the SHAM group received placebo press tacks at the same acupuncture points alongside standard analgesia. The primary endpoint was postoperative pain measured on a numeric rating scale, the NRS‐11, calculated as the area under the curve. The cumulative use of routine postoperative analgesics, time to first defaecation, and quality of life were analysed using the Kruskal–Wallis rank sum test, Fisher's exact test, and Pearson's chi‐squared test.
Results
The ACU group reported significantly less postoperative pain compared to the SHAM (P = 0.007) and CON groups (P = 0.02). There were no significant difference in median (interquartile range) cumulative pain medication usage, time to first defaecation (CON: 37 33, 44 h; SHAM: 37 33, 42 h; ACU: 37 33, 41 h; P > 0.9), or health status at discharge (EuroQol five‐dimension, five‐level general health assessment questionnaire: CON: 70 65–83; SHAM: 70 60–80; ACU: 70 50–80).
Conclusion
Incorporating acupuncture into postoperative pain management can improve patient postoperative outcomes.

To be eligible for inclusion, studies had to include acute exercise, or long-term training interventions, with blood flow restriction, along with including pre and post intervention pain measurements.
A total of 13 studies met the inclusion criteria. Among these 13 studies, 3 studies examined exercise-induced hypoalgesia after an acute bout of resistance exercise with blood flow restriction, and 10 studies investigated pain reduction following long-term blood flow restriction training.
Existing literature suggests that low load resistance exercise with blood flow restriction may serve as an effective pain management method for those who are unable or unwilling to train with high loads. Several potential mechanisms have been suggested, however, the roles of these mechanisms are still unclear and require further clarification. Future research should consider implementing different methods of blood flow restriction application, and research study design to clarify the utility and efficacy of blood flow restriction as a pain management tool, by itself or in combination with exercise.
•Low load exercise in combination with blood flow restriction can reduce pain following a single bout of exercise.•Repeated application of blood flow restricted exercise can reduce pain in those rehabilitating from injury.•Low load blood flow restricted exercise may serve as a viable method for those who are unable to train with higher loads.
