PURPOSELow back pain is the most frequently reported musculoskeletal disorder and represents one of the highest patient burdens in healthcare. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to ...investigate the effectiveness of Pilates exercise on pain intensity and functional disability caused by low back pain (LBP). MATERIALS AND METHODSA Systematic review with meta-analysis was conducted. Data sources: MEDLINE-NLM and MEDLINE-EBSCO. We also searched on Scopus Elsevier, Cochrane, DOAJ, SciELO, PEDro, and PLOS ONE databases. Eligibility criteria: randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating LBP in which the primary treatment was based on Pilates exercise compared with no exercise, or non-specific exercise. RESULTSThe search returned 1566 records of which 36 articles were included in the systematic review and 19 in the meta-analysis. Twenty-two studies compared the effects of Pilates exercise vs no exercise and 13 studies examined the effects of Pilates exercise vs non-specific exercise. Analysis showed that Pilates had a positive effect on the perception of LBP vs no exercise. A similar trend occurred with non-specific exercise. CONCLUSIONSPilates exercise can decrease LBP compared to no exercise and non-specific exercise. General practitioners should consider Pilates exercise as an effective strategy to manage LBP and counteract the growing health. Exercise therapy for lumbar disorders is aimed at correcting and maintaining postures and activities that increase mechanical stress on the lumbar spine in daily life.Exercise therapy based on the ...Pilates method involves the following: 1) exercising the upper and lower limbs with stabilization of the lumbar spine and pelvis to maintain the neutral position (physiological lumbar lordosis); and 2) enhancing thoracic spine mobility to reduce the mechanical stress on the lumbar spine. In other words, the maintenance of the neutral position (physiological lumbar lordosis) and increased spinal segmental mobility even in various life conditions are the goals of Pilates exercise. Therefore, Pilates exercise can be effective not only for lumbago, but also as postoperative exercise for lumbar spine disorders. The clinical effects of Pilates exercise need to be investigated further.

Workout programmes have proven physiological benefits, and it is widely accepted that they can yield more positive health outcomes when parameters such as balance and mobility are at play. This study ...intends to examine the effects of a 12-week mat pilates workout program on mobility and dynamic balance parameters in the former athlete group (FAG) and the sedentary group (SG). The study was designed in an experimental design with pre-test and post-test in two groups. The study group consisted of 30 female participants, SG (n=15) and FAG (n = 15). Dynamic balance values were measured using the Star Excursion Balance Test, and lower extremity mobility was measured using the Sit and Reach Test. Both groups conducted mat pilates exercises twice a week for 12 weeks. At the end of the 12-week mat pilates workout programme, a significant difference of increase was obtained in the mobility values of the FAG (p<0,002) and the SG (p<0,001). The Y Balance Test identified a significant difference of increase with pre-test and post-test in anterior (p = 0.04), postero-lateral (p = 0.03), posteromedial (p = 0.04) directions balance in the FAG. In the difference between groups, SG showed a significant increase in posterolateral (p = 0.001) and posteromedial (p = 0.002) directions balance than FAG at post-test. At the end of the 12-week mat pilates workout programme, it was revealed out that the FAG scored better in post-test in dynamic balance than the SG although it scored lower in the dynamic balance pre-test than the SG.
Anahtar Kelimeler: Parkinson hastalıǧı, pilates, bantlama, denge, postüral control ABSTRACT Introduction: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of Pilates training and elastic ...taping on balance and postural control in patients with early stage Parkinson's disease (PD). In elastic taping group, in addition to Pilates training, elastic taping was applied to the upper back twice a week for 6 weeks with the aim of postural correction. In order to evaluate the postural control before and after the training, Berg Balance Scale and Trunk Impairment Scale were implemented and Limits of stability (LOS), Sit-to-Stand, Walk Across and Tandem Walking Tests were also performed by Neur°Com Balance Master performance test device. Results: The data of 20 patients (6 male in Pilates group, 2 female and 6 male in elastic taping group, 3 female and 3 male in control group) were analyzed.
A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to investigate the effectiveness of the Pilates exercise program during pregnancy on different delivery outcomes. Various databases were searched ...from inception until November 2022. The included studies compared Pilates exercise to routine antenatal care in pregnant women. The primary outcomes assessed were vaginal and cesarean delivery rates, as well as labor duration. Secondary outcomes included episiotomy incidence, Apgar scores, and epidural analgesia. Seven studies met the inclusion criteria, involving a total of 1,003 patients. Results indicated a significant increase in the vaginal delivery rate among the Pilates exercise group compared to the control group (p < .001). Moreover, the Pilates exercise group exhibited significantly reduced rates of cesarean delivery and shorter labor duration. Pilates exercise was associated with a significant decline in the incidence of episiotomy and the number of women requiring epidural analgesia during delivery (p < .001 & p = .008). In addition, Apgar scores at one and five minutes were significantly higher in the Pilates exercise group compared to the control group (p < .001). In conclusion, Pilates exercise during pregnancy has a positive effect on maternal outcomes and Apgar scores. However, more trials are needed to confirm these findings.
Aim: This study aims to define the effect of a weight-loss diet on body composition in women doing reformer pilates for 12 weeks. It compares dietary habits in subject groups with and without a ...weight-loss diet and macro and micronutrient intakes at the beginning and end of the study.
Method: A total of 49 women (≥18 age) were randomly allocated to either a control (CG: reformer pilates; n=23) or a study (SG: reformer pilates+weight-loss diet; n=26) group. In both groups, subjects did pilates for 45 minutes a day three times a week for a total of 12 weeks. Their body weight (kg), waist circumference (cm), hip circumference (cm), neck circumference (cm), mid-upper arm circumference (cm), body composition, waist/height ratio, and body mass index (BMI; kg/m2) were evaluated at the beginning and the third month of the study. Dietary habits of all subjects were questioned, their 24-hour retrospective food consumption was taken, and their physical activity levels were evaluated through the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (Short Form).
Results: The use of vitamin and mineral supplements in SG was lower than CG (p=0.003). The twelve-week evaluation showed a significantly higher increase in dietary protein and calcium levels in SG than CG (p<0.05). In SG, a significantly higher decrease was determined in body weight, BMI, waist circumference, hip circumference, and waist/height ratio, and a higher increase in Basal Metabolic Rate, body muscle, and body water, compared to CG (p<0.05).
Conclusion: Pilates combined with a weight-loss diet has more positive effects on body composition than pilates alone. Providing dietary training and counseling for women who practice reformer pilates will increase the health benefits of exercise.
