This article presents a case study study of a proposed analytical framework for dissecting and analysing intimacy in podcasts. The podcast medium is increasingly perceived as inherently intimate, but ...this discourse is still unprecise and has never been clearly outlined. It is furthermore essential to better define podcast intimacy because of its effective and widespread impact on podcasters and listeners. Over time, a self-reinforcing discourse and self-fulfilling prophecy of intimacy has built up around podcasts. Based on podcast literature (Berry, 2016; Euritt, 2023; Lindgren, 2021; Meserko, 2014; Spinelli and Dann, 2019; Swiatek, 2018) and podcast intimacy’s roots in, respectively, Web 2.0 and radio, four parameters for analysing podcast intimacy are outlined: Intimacy in listening, intimacy in what is said, intimacy in how it is said and intimacy in cross-media interactions – most significantly via social media. Each parameter contains several subcategories and questions for analysis which are collected in a schema. The schema is a tool for media researchers and students to identify how and why a podcast creates intimacy. It is also valuable for increasing the awareness of how podcasts work and impact the world. And it finally offers opportunities for podcast producers and publishers to learn more about how their podcast create intimacy and how they can attract listeners and followers through the creation of intimacy.

When evaluating any new medium or technology we often turn to the familiar as a point of reference. Podcasting was no different, drawing obvious comparisons with radio. While there are traits within ...all podcasts that are radiogenic, one must also consider whether such distinctions are
beneficial to the medium. Indeed, one might argue that when one considers the manner in which podcasts are created and consumed then there is an increasing sense in which podcasting can present itself as a distinct medium. While it is true to suggest that as an adaptable medium radio has simply
evolved and podcasting is its latest iteration. In doing so, we might fail to appreciate the unique values that exist. In this article, I suggest that by considering podcasts on their terms we might begin to uncover new truths about a medium in change.
As news podcasts increase in number and popularity, conventions are emerging for how this genre of audio journalism constructs compelling storytelling that takes advantage of the specifics of the ...medium.
This qualitative study examines 11 shortlisted and award-winning journalism podcasts in the 2019 Australian and British Podcast Awards through a narrative journalism framework, with a focus on the use of emotions and techniques to build experiences of intimacy. The analysis is done through the lens of Hilmes soundwork concept to understand both the impact of audio on journalistic storytelling and podcasting as an emerging journalism genre.
This study demonstrates that award-winning podcasts feature personalised journalism that is afforded by the intimacy of the audio form. In contrast to journalistic norms of objective, disembodied reporters, podcast journalism uses narrative elements forged around emotions and first-person reporting to build intimate relationships between the journalist and the listener. The study also supports Dowling and Miller's findings that self-reflexivity and transparency of the reporting process have become "staple ingredients" of podcasting.

The study integrated the social identity theory and the uses and gratification theory in probing factors behind the stickiness of audience to podcast programs, mainly in the two dimensions of ...perceived characteristics of the podcast creator (identity similarity, identity uniqueness, identity prestige, sincerity, and self-disclosure) and perceived podcast features (entertaining, narrative transportation, and multitasking). Podcast creator characteristics can affect audience stickiness via their psychological response (wishful identification, parasocial relationship). The study was conducted via a questionnaire survey, soliciting 302 valid responses and employing the partial least squares technique for testing hypotheses. The study finds that except for identity distinctiveness and self-disclosure, all the other podcast creator characteristics positively influence the audience's psychological response and, thus, their stickiness to podcasts. Among podcast program nature, both entertaining and narrative transportation affect podcast stickiness significantly, but multitasking has no significant influence. The study provides theoretical and practical insight into the audience stickiness issue for digital audio media podcasts.
