This book is the first full-length in-depth treatment of settings as a focal point for planning, organizing and implementing health promotion. The concept of ′setting′ is fundamental to theory and ...practice in health promotion. Internationally renowned authors describe the state-of-the-art in the theory and practice of health promotion in settings such as the home, school, workplace, community, and state and offer insightful commentaries on each other′s work.
After decades of being overlooked, corpus evidence is becoming an important component of the teaching and learning of languages. Above all, the profession needs guidance in the practicalities of ...using corpora, interpreting the results and applying them to the problems and opportunities of the classroom. This book is intensely practical, written mainly by a new generation of language teachers who are acknowledged experts in central aspects of the discipline. It offers advice on what to do in the classroom, how to cope with teachers' queries about language, what corpora to use including learner corpora and spoken corpora and how to handle the variability of language; it reports on some current research and explains how the access software is constructed, including an opportunity for the practitioner to write small but useful programs; and it takes a look into the future of corpora in language teaching.
Poorer people live shorter lives and are more often ill than the rich. This disparity has drawn attention to the remarkable sensitivity of health to the social environment. This publication examines ...this social gradient in health, and explains how psychological and social influences affect physical health and longevity. It then looks at what is known about the most important social determinants of health today, and the role that public policy can play in shaping a social environment that is more conducive to better health. This second edition relies on the most up-to-date sources in its selection and description of the main social determinants of health in our society today. Key research sources are given for each: stress, early life, social exclusion, working conditions, unemployment, social support, addiction, healthy food and transport policy. Policy and action for health need to address the social determinants of health, attacking the causes of ill health before they can lead to problems. This is a challenging task for both decision-makers and public health actors and advocates. This publication provides the facts and the policy options that will enable them to act.
This book takes stock of current research into computer learner corpora conducted both by ELT and SLA specialists. It should be of particular interest to researchers looking to assess its relevance ...to SLA theory and ELT practice. Throughout the volume, emphasis is also placed on practical, methodological aspects of computer learner corpus research, in particular the contribution of technology to the research process. The advantages and disadvantages of automated and semi-automated approaches are analyzed, the capabilities of linguistic software tools investigated, the corpora (and compilation processes) described in detail. In this way, an important function of the volume is to give practical insight to researchers who may be considering compiling a corpus of learner data or embarking on learner corpus research. The volume is divided into three main sections: Section 1 gives a general overview of learner corpus research; Section 2 illustrates a range of corpus-based approaches to interlanguage analysis; Section 3 demonstrates the direct pedagogical relevance of learner corpus work.
Promotion of health has become a central feature of health policy at local, national and international levels, forming part of global health initiatives such as those endorsed by the World Health ...Organisation. The issues examined in The Sociology of Health Promotion include sociology of risk, the body, consumption, processes of surveillance and normalisation and considerations relating to race and gender in the implementation of health programmes. It will be invaluable reading for students, health promoters, public health doctors and academics.

What are the goals of health promotion and the most apropriate means of achieving them? The prevailing view is that these goals are to prolong life and reduce mortality rates. Since the leading ...causes of morbidity and mortality are now largely attributable to lifestyle behaviors--smoking, diet, exercise, etc.--the means of achieving reductions in heart disease, cancer, strokes, diabetes and other chronic conditins are to identify more effective techniques for changing people's behavior. Virtually all health promotion research is currently directed towards accomplishing this objective. But at what cost? As researchers strive for more effective ways to change people's behavior, what are the implications for individual autonomy, integrity, and responsibility? Buchanan sets out to explain why a science of health promotion is neither imminent or estimable. He argues that health promotin is inescapably a moral and political endeavor and that goals more befitting the realization of human well-being are to promote self-knowledge, individual autonomy, integrity, and responsibility through putting into practice more democratic processes of self-direction and mutual support in civil society.
This is a comprehensive guide to the frameworks, theories, and methods used to evaluate health promotion programs. The book builds on the author's experience in evaluating health communication ...projects in the US and developing countries and in teaching evaluation to graduate-level students in public health. It will be of use to both students and researchers and designers involved in all types of evaluation activities. The chapters are divided into three sections. Part I covers health promotion framework and theories, formative research, and process evaluation methods. Part II deals with study designs, the techniques to determine sample selection and size, writing questionnaires, constructing scales, and managing data. Part III uses data from a national campaign to illustrate methods for impact evaluation including basic and advanced statistical analysis. This text provides the tools needed to understand how and why evaluations are conducted, and it will serve as a reference for evaluators. It covers every aspect of he research and evaluation activities needed to assess a health promotion program.
