Promising policing technologies. Experiences, obstacles and police needs regarding law enforcement technologies Police forces and law enforcement agencies in many countries are continuously trying to ...optimize the use of technologies in policing and law enforcement. Efforts are being made to remove existing technological, legal and organizational obstacles to create more opportunities of promising technologies, both existing and new. This contribution describes the results of a survey among 46 police forces and other law enforcement agencies in eleven countries. Their experiences with policing technologies and their needs and preferences in this regard are described. The prevalence and satisfaction of existing technologies, including wiretapping, fingerprints, DNA research, database coupling, data mining and profiling, camera surveillance and network analyses were investigated. Legal, technological and organizational obstacles for the use of technology in policing were mapped and the extent to which policing technologies are evaluated and yield success stories was investigated. The main obstacles, according to the respondents, are insufficient financial resources and insufficient availability of technology. One in four organizations is lacking any clear, appealing success stories and half of the respondents indicated they were not performing any evaluations on the effectiveness of using particular technologies in policing. As a result, the information available on whether technologies in policing are actually working is very limited.
This study is a survey of dialect use, accent strength, knowledge and use of lexical dialect items, and attitude among adolescents in the Eindhoven area, an urbanized area in the Dutch province of ...North-Brabant. Regiolects tend to emerge and take over the functions of dialects in large parts of Europe, including the Netherlands, especially in urbanized areas. The basic research hypothesis of this study is that respondents report regiolect use more often than dialect use. Data of 259 respondents have been gathered. The age varied from 12 to 18, education ranged from VMBO (lower secondary professional education) to VWO (pre university education) and all respondents lived in either Eindhoven or surrounding places, defining the urbanized area of Eindhoven. For analyses, respondents have been divided in three age groups, three education groups and two language groups. Analyses of the data suggest that Standard Dutch is the preferred variety in every domain of language use, but a substantial number of respondents reported to be able to speak regiolect or dialect. Many dialect items were unknown to our respondents, but regiolect items were reported to be widely used, even by respondents who claimed to be using Standard Dutch exclusively. Accordingly, respondents generally had a positive attitude towards both Brabantic language varieties and the culture of Brabant. Adolescents, even when coming from outside of the province of Brabant, have an obvious sense of belonging to Brabant, as signalled by their widespread use of the Brabantic regiolect.
The effect of camera changes on the recognition and evaluation of Postbus 51 campaign advertisements Campaign advertisements of the Dutch Government (the so-called Postbus 51 campaigns) that were ...broadcast between 1999 and 2009 on the Dutch television were used to examine whether camera changes with and without a change of the central object in the screen have an influence on the recognition and evaluation of the advertisements. The advertisements were content analyzed and combined with population survey data regarding the recognition (N = 193) and evaluation (N = 137) of these advertisements. Results showed that the relationship between camera changes including the change of the central object and recognition takes the form of an inverted U. There was a linear positive relationship between camera changes with a change of the central object and evaluations. No effects on recognition and evaluation were found for camera changes without a change of the central object. PUBLICATION ABSTRACT
Many plant species are visited by a variety ot insect species, each with its own pollination efficiency. Plant pollination is the overall result of all visiting insects but the insect's effectiveness ...may influence the quality of pollination (number of pollen deposited, purity of pollen depositions and chance of cross pollination). Specialist pollinators are expected to refine their plant choice to one or a few plant species with the consequence that their body load may be rather pure but they do not consequently deposit most pollen grains. The unspecialized plant species Scabiosa columbaria (small scabious, Dipsacaceae) offers the opportunity to analyze the contributions to pollination of both generalist and specialist insect species in the core (France) and more to edge of its distribution (The Netherlands). Several behavioral characteristics were considered as most important for the quality of pollination: size and purity of the pollen body load, flight distance between two visits, number of Scabiosa pollen deposited per head and per stigma per second. Dasypoda argentata (a specialist bee species, males and females) scored high for most of the characteristics. The other insect groups (syrphids, honeybee, bumblebees and butterflies) were more moderate to poor pollinators. Butterflies scored only high for flight distances but not for the other variables. No insect species pollinated the head completely during a single visit. Small flies (Siphona geniculata) were very poor pollinators. All insect taxa contributed to the pollination of S. columbaria but they differed largely in various aspects of the quality of pollination. During the morning most pollengrains per stigma per second were deposited. Differences between data collected during the morning and afternoon were pronounced so it is emphasized to collect comparable data within a short time period.
Adults of Anthophora plumipes appear in early spring and make nests in aggregations. Nests are preferably made in vertical loess or loamy soil. The bee species is also frequently found in urban ...areas, where it nests in plant pots, old walls or soils that lay sheltered by building walls. The brood cells are situated in the upper layer of the soil and are internally covered with a waxy layer. The larva in the brood cell eats from a liquid food supply of nectar and pollen until it is fully grown. After hatching, the larva develops in spring and summer and overwinters as adult in the brood cell. The bee Melecta albifrons and the beetle Sitaris muralisy are brood parasites of A. plumipes; they might regulate population size and may even extirpate a local population. Both parasites have distinct tactics to enter the brood cells of their host. Melecta albifrons opens a brood cell with the tip of her abdomen and attaches an egg on the inside of the cell wall. Sitaris muralis has a more ingenious strategy and their larvae at tach to adults of A. plumipes and are thus being transported to the brood cell of the host.
