Are Power Line Communications (PLC) a good candidate for Smart Grid applications? The objective of this paper is to address this important question. To do so, we provide an overview of what PLC can ...deliver today by surveying its history and describing the most recent technological advances in the area. We then address Smart Grid applications as instances of sensor networking and network control problems and discuss the main conclusions one can draw from the literature on these subjects. The application scenario of PLC within the Smart Grid is then analyzed in detail. Because a necessary ingredient of network planning is modeling, we also discuss two aspects of engineering modeling that relate to our question. The first aspect is modeling the PLC channel through fading models. The second aspect we review is the Smart Grid control and traffic modeling problem which allows us to achieve a better understanding of the communications requirements. Finally, this paper reports recent studies on the electrical and topological properties of a sample power distribution network. Power grid topological studies are very important for PLC networking as the power grid is not only the information source but also the information delivery system-a unique feature when PLC is used for the Smart Grid.

Intelligent fire safety systems place higher demands on the speed and reliability of data communication between sensors, controllers, and other devices. The two‐wire bus has become a ...significant trend in developing fire safety communication systems because of its low cost and simple maintenance. This paper proposes a two‐wire bus communication system for fire safety based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) technology. First, we introduce the low‐voltage power line channel model and conduct relevant simulations, providing the conditions for subsequent simulation work. Then, we design the system's transmission and reception schemes, provide the parameters, and introduce each technology used. Finally, we conducted system simulations based on three different channel models, and the system performance is compared among different encoding, modulation, and channel estimation methods. The simulation results show that the system designed in this paper has superior performance compared with other systems and can meet the requirements of intelligent fire safety systems for communication speed and reliability.

Information about real radial power distribution network is used to define a PLC channel model in NS-3 ...simulator. The overhead LV distribution network was modelled in the extended bandwidth. Results of real measurements are linked with simulation results in order to see which parameters influence the communication significantly.
For developing a reliable Power Line Carrier Communication (PLCC) system, it is extremely important to know the characteristics of different subsystems in PLCC and power lines. The circuit used to ...superimpose carrier signal from the transmitter with high potential power lines is termed as line tuners. The design and simulation of a capacitive type line tuner meeting IEC 60481:1974 and IEEE Std C93.4-2012 are included in this article. The wave trap allows the power signal to pass through but blocks the high-frequency carrier signal to reach terminal equipment which works at 50/60 Hertz. Three types of wave traps are studied as part of this paper: single frequency, dual frequency, and wideband wave traps. Impedance characteristics obtained in simulation show effective rejection of carrier signal as desired. The distribution power transformers are an inevitable part of the power line network which offers high attenuation to carrier signal as being inductive it functions as low pass filter. To overcome this problem a bypass circuit which could be incorporated in future power transformers is proposed in this article. The Resistance, Inductance, and Capacitance (RLC) parameter of the power line cable used in the simulation model are derived based on the experimental values observed on an actual 11 kV underground cable and thus replicates actual field conditions. A complete PLCC system with all the above components is presented in this article and can be used as a testbed by designers to validate the MODEM for communication in different topologies by modifying the elements according to actual field conditions.

In this study, a joint detection and generalised sum-product decoding algorithm for a two-way relay physical-layer network coding (PLNC) system in power line communication is proposed. Distinct from ...the existing works which mainly focused on separate or iterative PLNC detection and decoding, the proposed algorithm is a belief propagation-based joint PLNC detection and decoding algorithm, which integrates the PLNC, symbol detector and channel decoder together. The proposed algorithm is described by a joint factor graph, in which the detection nodes are connected to the factor graph of a generalised sum-product decoder. The PLNC demodulation is redesigned to make sure that the degree of each detection node in the joint factor graph is more than one. A low computational complexity solution of the proposed joint decoding algorithm based on the majority-logic algorithm is also proposed. The simulation results reveal the validity of the proposed algorithms.
In this paper, the use of chaos in power-line communication (PLC) with blind equalization of the multipath effects is considered. After investigating equalization methods for chaotic signals, we ...propose an minimum phase-space volume-extended Kalman filter (EKF) equalization method to fulfill the practical requirements. First, an EKF-based method is used to replace the inverse filter to overcome the channel noise. Second, a nearest neighbor search method and a fast system identification method are used to reduce the computational complexity. Computer simulations are used to confirm the efficiency of the proposed method. Furthermore, real PLC channel experiments are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of this method.
