This article analyses the strategies implemented by two European reference newspapers - El País and Le Monde - in their digital transformation process during the period 2005-2020. Based on the ...results of the research programme “News and Quality in European reference media” of the “HGH Media, Society and Education” group of the University of the Basque Country (in which the author participated), as well as on recent scientific reading, this study compares the quality of content, the internal and external growth strategies, and the profitability of both media. After mentioning the disruptions that have shaken the sector and explaining our methodological approach, we will see that El País and Le Monde have a similar editorial line, but a very different growth strategy, which have conditioned the evolution of these media.
Beginning in mid-2008, the Tamil diaspora around the world organized in extraordinary activism against the escalating violence in northern Sri Lanka. Responses to the 2009 Tamil diaspora protests in ...Canada provide a unique case study to examine a contemporary moment of resistance, when race thinking and spatiality intersected within and beyond national borders. Using critical theories of representation, I conceptualize Canadian print media coverage of the protests as representations of a “strange encounter” with the other. I explore the media's production of the other and its conflation of the Tamil protester-terrorist through constructions of space. I also examine how scale operates through underlying national values to conceptualize a precarious structure of belonging. Through these discursive moves, I demonstrate how the resulting figure of the “other,” the “outlaw,” and the “outsider” came to represent and delegitimize the racialized/ spatialized Tamil protest(er).
El objetivo de la presente investigación es proponer una escala de medida de valor de marca para medios de prensa escritos. Para esto se desarrolló un proceso de 3 etapas constituido por: la ...elaboración de una escala con validez de contenido; la aplicación de un pre test cuantitativo a la escala construida y, finalmente, la recolección de datos con la escala mejorada y el análisis de las propiedades psicométricas de esta. Para evaluar las propiedades psicométricas se realizó, principalmente, un análisis factorial confirmatorio al modelo de ecuaciones estructurales que representa dicha escala de medida. Las 6 dimensiones explicativas resultantes son: lealtad afectiva-comportamental, lealtad cognitiva, asociaciones de marca, calidad percibida, reconocimiento de marca y recordación de marca.
The aim of the present study is to propose a scale that enables brand equity for print media outlets to be measured. For this, a three-step process was developed, consisting of: the development of a scale with validity of content; the application of a pre-quantitative test to the scale constructed and, finally, the data collection with the improved scale, and the analysis of the psychometric properties of this scale. The assessment of the psychometric properties included a confirmatory factor analysis of the structural equation modeling that represents the measurement scale. The six resulting explanatory dimensions are: affective-behavioral loyalty, cognitive loyalty, brand associations, perceived quality, brand recognition and brand recall.
O objectivo da presente investigação é propor uma escala de medida de valor de marca para meios de impressa escritos. Para isto desenvolveu-se um processo de três etapas constituído pela: elaboração de uma escala com validade de conteúdo; aplicação de um pré-teste quantitativo à escala construída e, finalmente, a recolecção de dados com a escala melhorada e a análise das propriedades psicométricas desta. Para avaliar as propriedades psicométricas realizou-se, principalmente, uma análise factorial confirmativa do modelo de equações estruturais que representam a dita escala de medida. As seis dimensões explicativas resultantes são: lealdade afectiva-comportamental, lealdade cognitiva, associações de marca, qualidade percebida, reconhecimentos de marca e recordação de marca.

This paper investigates the content of the editorial commentary in the Melbourne-based commercial Italian-language newspaper Il Globo from 1979 to 1989 and argues that throughout the period under ...examination it consistently maintained a proactive role for, and on behalf of, the Italo-Australian community. A longitudinal study on selected editorials written by then editor-in-chief Nino Randazzo shows that the newspaper lobbied relevant authorities and Australian governments alike on issues that mattered most to the Italian community, especially those related to domestic politics, migrant settlement and immigration. Using a content analysis methodology, the editorials were categorised into commonly emerging themes, highlighting the extent to which the newspaper commented on issues that affected the rapidly changing Italo-Australian community which experienced an important demographic shift from being predominantly Italian-born to increasingly Australian-born.
The period around the publication of John Lubbock's Origin of civilisation in 1870 and Charles Darwin's Descent of man and selection in relation to sex the following year is key to a re-evaluation of ...the relationship between the two men, usually characterized as that of pupil and master. It is in the making of Descent that Lubbock's role as a scientific collaborator is most easily discerned, a role best understood within the social and political context of the time. Lubbock made Darwin—both the man and his science—acceptable and respectable. Less obvious is Darwin's conscious cultivation of Lubbock's patronage in both his private and public life, and Lubbock's equally conscious bestowal, culminating in his role in Darwin's burial in Westminster Abbey.

After giving a history ofPerspective, ...the article uses statistical analysis, network diagramming, and network analysis to understand the shifting taste in the creation of the canon. There is more work that can be done in the field, and new technologies and programs may shed light on this issue.
All women’s magazines are not the same: content, outlook, and format combine to shape publications quite distinctively. While magazines in general have long been understood as a significant force in ...women’s lives, many critiques have limited themselves to discussions of mainstream printed publications that engage with narrowly stereotypical representations of femininity. Looking at a range of women’s magazines (Cooperative Correspondence Club and Housewife) and magazine programmes (Woman’s Hour and Houseparty), Magazine Movements not only extends our definition of a magazine, but most importantly, unearths the connections between women’s cultures, specific magazines and the implied reader. The author first outlines the existing field of magazine studies, and analyzes the methodologies employed in accessing and assessing the cultural competence of magazines. Each chapter then provides a case study of a different kind of magazine: different in media form or style of presentation or audience connection, or all three. Forster not only extends our definition of a magazine, but most importantly, unearths the connections between women’s cultures, specific magazines and the implied reader. In this way, fresh insights are provided into the long-standing importance of the magazine to the variety of feminisms on offer in Britain, from the mid twentieth century to the present day.
Rights & Reproductions: The Handbook for Cultural Institutions will be the first comprehensive resource to focus solely on the rights and reproductions guidelines, established standards, and emerging ...best practices at cultural institutions. This forthcoming publication will be co-published in the summer of 2015 by the Indianapolis Museum of Art and the American Alliance of Museums. With intellectual property laws and rights and reproductions methodologies ever changing with new technologies, this digital publication, produced using the Online Scholarly Catalogue Initiative (OSCI) Toolkit platform, will be a living document that can be updated to remain current with trends and best practices. This article provides an overview of the evolution of the Handbook from an idea hoping for grant support through the authoring, editing, and entry of its content into the OSCI Toolkit to create this new digital publication.
On 7 July 2005, Britain suffered its first ever suicide attack. Four young British-born Muslims, apparently well-educated and from integrated backgrounds, killed their fellow citizens, including ...other Muslims. The incident raised the vision that British Muslims would be seen as the ‘enemy within’ and a ‘fifth column’ in British society. To examine how this view emerged, this thesis investigates the representation of British Muslims in two major British broadsheets, The Guardian and The Daily Telegraph, over a two-year period (7 July 2005-8 July 2007). A corpus of 274 news items, including editorials, comments, interviews, and news reports on the London bombings, has been collected and analysed using the inductive approach based upon thematic analysis. The thesis asks a significant question: How did these broadsheets present British Muslims in the wake of the London bombings? This thesis aims to present a narrative of how the London bombings (hereafter 7/7) emerged in these broadsheets based on their reaction to an interpretation and perception of the 7/7 event. This research indicates that the two broadsheets shared a similar cultural approach in combating Islamist terrorism, by encouraging the embracing of British values, although their different political orientations led to them differing attitudes over the precise manner in which this should be achieved. The Guardian was more concerned about individual liberty and human rights, while The Daily Telegraph emphasised the adaptation of tough legislation to combat terrorism. Given modern Britain’s secular moral fibre, the supremacy of British values dominated the debates on British Muslims which somehow reflected a manifestation of a systematic campaign to redefine Islam as a religion that fits into secular Western society, validating terms such as ‘Moderate Muslim’, ‘Islamic terrorists’, ‘Islamic extremists’, ‘Islamic militants’ and ‘Islamic terrorism’. Although both newspapers argue that radicalisation is a foreign-imported dilemma that has its roots in “Islamic ideology”, they differ in their attitudes on how to deal with it. This thesis uses Cohen’s (1972) text, which suggests that the media often portray certain groups within society as “deviant” and “folk devils” and blames them for crimes. This research into the reactions of two broadsheets permits a contemporary discussion of the London bombings and British Muslims in the light of Cohen’s concept. It aims to locate the presence of a nexus of the four Ps - political parties, pressure groups, the press, and public bodies - that influence reporting and shape the debates (Ost, 2002; Chas, 2006, p.75). It is evident that the reporting of the two broadsheets blends three significant components: the views of self-proclaimed Islamic scholars, experts and hate preachers; the use of out-of-context verses of the Quran; and the use of political language to represent British Muslims. Arguably, the press transformed the 7/7 event, suggesting that it was driven by religious theology rather than being a politically motivated act.
