The authors examine an increasingly popular open innovation practice, "design crowdsourcing," wherein firms seek external inputs in the form of functional design solutions for new product development ...from the "crowd." They investigate conditions under which managers crowdsource design and determine whether such decisions subsequently boost product sales. The empirical analysis is guided by qualitative insights gathered from executive interviews. The authors use a novel data set from a pioneering crowdsourcing firm and find that three concept design characteristics—perceived usability, reliability, and technical complexity—are associated with the decision to crowdsource design. They use an instrumental variable method accounting for the endogenous nature of crowdsourcing decisions to understand when such a decision affects downstream sales. The authors find that design crowdsourcing is positively related to unit sales and that this effect is moderated by the idea quality of the initial product concept. Using a change-score analysis of consumer ratings, they find that design crowdsourcing enhances perceived reliability and usability. They discuss the strategic implications of involving the crowd, beyond ideation, in helping transform ideas into effective products.
The World Health Organization (WHO) alms to reduce new leprosy cases by 70% by 2030, necessitating advancements In leprosy diagnostics. Here we discuss the development of two WHO's target product ...profiles for such diagnostics. These profiles define criteria for product use, design, performance, configuration and distribution, with a focus on accessibility and affordability. The first target product profile outlines requirements for tests to confirm diagnosis of leprosy in individuals with clinical signs and symptoms, to guide multidrug treatment initiation. The second target product profile outlines requirements for tests to detect Mycobacterium leprae or M. lepromatosis infection among asymptomatic contacts of leprosy patients, aiding prophylactic interventions and prevention. Statistical modelling was used to assess sensitivity and specificity requirements for these diagnostic tests. The paper highlights challenges in achieving high specificity, given the varying endemicity of M. leprae, and identifying target analytes with robust performance across leprosy phenotypes. We conclude that diagnostics with appropriate product design and performance characteristics are crucial for early detection and preventive intervention, advocating for the transition from leprosy management to prevention. phrase omitted
This study aims to investigate the role of external network resources of emerging market ventures (EMVs) in shaping ventures’ entrepreneurial capability and achieving superior new product development ...(NPD) performance in the international marketplace. It integrates the extended resource-based view and knowledge-seeking perspectives of EMVs with the literature on entrepreneurship and international business. We collected survey data from 179 high-tech ventures in China and validated the model using structural equation modeling. Findings suggest that external network resources of Chinese ventures play a crucial role in driving their development of entrepreneurial capability, which in turn positively affects their international NPD performance. Moreover, findings elucidate the network condition in which they can facilitate the contribution of entrepreneurial capability to NPD performance. They also suggest that EMVs with well-developed entrepreneurial capability perform better in NPD for international markets when they are capable of developing international networks.
•International customer involvement partially mediates the link between relationship learning and supplier performance.•Cultural distance weakens the impact of relationship learning on international ...customer involvement.•Customer dependence on supplier strengthens the impact of relationship learning on international customer involvement.•Cultural distance negatively moderates the relationship between international customer involvement and supplier performance.
This study focuses on relationship learning and its implications for international customer involvement during the design stage of the new product development (NPD) process. It utilizes relationship learning capability perspective to investigate the linkages between relationship learning, international customer involvement, and suppliers' performance. We also investigate whether customer dependence and cultural distance moderate the association between (a) relationship learning and international customer involvement and (b) international customer involvement and supplier performance. Using 264 respondents from Chinese manufacturing firms that have international customers, this study identifies that international customer involvement partially mediates the link between relationship learning and supplier performance. Furthermore, customer dependence strengthens, and cultural distance weakens, the effect of relationship learning on international customer involvement. However, only cultural distance negatively moderates the relationship between international customer involvement and supplier performance.
Despite the growing body of research on crowdfunding, there is still a critical need to clarify the essential elements of its connection to sustainability. This study explores how various constructs, ...such as green product co-design, green market insight, environmental legitimacy, and the stage of product development, bear on the success of crowdfunding endeavors intended to finance eco-friendly products. We employed a questionnaire to gather insights from 113 campaign initiators, deviating from the predominant focus on web-based data collection found in much of the existing literature. The collected data were then examined through the application of structural equation modeling techniques. The findings indicate that, with the exception of environmental legitimacy, all the examined constructs exhibited a positive effect on the campaign's success. Furthermore, it was observed that the stage of development subtly diminishes the positive relationship between green product co-design practices and the success of a crowdfunding campaign. Our study offers valuable theoretical insights in light of these findings. Additionally, the paper proffers pragmatic suggestions for more effective crowdfunding of sustainable products.
