Based on recent findings about teacher learning, a critical analysis of traditional and new approaches to professional development is presented. To a large degree, teacher learning takes place ...unconsciously and involves cognitive, emotional and motivational dimensions. Moreover, teacher learning takes place at various levels. Although these insights may be inconvenient truths to policy-makers, empirical evidence is presented showing that approaches building on the multi-level and multi-dimensional nature of teacher learning are effective at influencing teacher behaviour. Hence, in teacher learning, the connection with the person of the teacher is crucial. Practical consequences for professional development are discussed.
In February 2019, the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) released the final report of the Continuing Board Certification: Vision for the Future initiative, issuing strong recommendations to ...replace ineffective, traditional mechanisms for physicians’ maintenance of certification with meaningful strategies that strengthen professional self-regulation and simultaneously engender public trust. The Vision report charges ABMS Member Boards, including the American Board of Surgery (ABS), to develop and implement a more formative, less summative approach to continuing certification. To realize the ABMS’s Vision in surgery, new programs must support the assessment of surgeons’ performance in practice, identification of individualized performance gaps, tailored goals to address those gaps, and execution of personalized action plans with accountability and longitudinal support.
Peer surgical coaching, especially when paired with video-based assessment, provides a structured approach that can meet this need. Surgical coaching was one of the approaches to continuing professional development that was discussed at an ABS-sponsored retreat in January 2020; this commentary review provides an overview of that discussion. The professional surgical societies, in partnership with the ABS, are uniquely positioned to implement surgical coaching programs to support the continuing certification of their membership. In this article, we provide historical context for board certification in surgery, interpret how the ABMS’s Vision applies to surgical performance, and highlight recent developments in video-based assessment and peer surgical coaching. We propose surgical coaching as a foundational strategy for accomplishing the ABMS’s Vision for continuing board certification in surgery.
•The ABMS published its Vision for the Future of Continuing Board Certification in 2019.•New continuing certification programs must integrate longitudinal, formative assessment strategies to advance practice.•Video-based assessments are foundational for intraoperative performance improvement efforts.•Peer surgical coaching supports the ABMS’s Vision of professionalism, lifelong learning, and skill development.
Based on years of extensive research on teacher development, this book offers a practical introduction to the concept of teacher reflection, demonstrating how student teachers can engage with ...reflective learning from their teaching and classroom experiences in a systematic and inspiring way. Providing practical models and guidelines for use in the classroom, renowned teacher educators Fred Korthagen and Ellen Nuijten outline various strategies for promoting reflection and illustrate how a deeper form of reflection 'core reflection' enhances awareness of professional identity and supports the dismantling of inner obstacles, therefore enhancing social justice and empowering diverse student populations. The authors demonstrate how a trajectory for learning can be designed to develop key competencies, as well as the role played by university- and school-based teacher educators in supporting teachers' self-directed reflection. Featuring a variety of tools that support professional growth, this unique text demystifies the area of teacher reflection, helping to provide concrete and inspiring examples for how to strengthen professional identity based on everyday challenges faced by practitioners. "The Power of Reflection in Teacher Education and Professional Development" is therefore an essential guide for students, in-service teachers, and teacher educators alike, as well as for anyone in the helping professions.
It often appears that academics and associated cultural workers take a critical view of everything except their own place in the world. We hear a great deal about museums "incorporating" critique, ...but nothing absorbs opposition like the Ph.D. machine, where every cultural infraction becomes material for a career. Similarly, historians of art have paid attention to images of labourers and capitalists, but given remarkably little consideration to their own class fraction--the petite bourgeoisie. This grouping, called here the Professional-Managerial Class (PMC), is all around us, yet it goes unnoticed; it is a visible-invisible object. My consideration of the Professional-Managerial Class will be historical in character, but in returning to the 1970s and looking again at the vivid debate from that time on the PMC I aim to highlight aspects of the analysis that have been overlooked in the recent rediscovery of the concept by the U.S. Left. Principally, this entails drawing attention to a structuring contradiction within the PMC bloc.
Nottingham Children’s Hospital has won international recognition for nurse leadership and career development opportunities. It is one of two services – the other being Nottingham Sexual Health ...service – that have secured accreditation from the American Nurses’ Credentialing Center.
The objectives of this study were to analyse the incidence of injuries in padel coaches, as well as the causes that cause them. Likewise, an attempt was made to identify preventive exercises that ...would reduce the appearance of these injuries. This is a descriptive study on a sample of 450 technicians from Extremadura and a minimum participatory size of 208 (confidence level=95%; margin of error=5%). For the analysis of the incidence, they completed a questionnaire on injuries produced in paddle tennis classes during the last year, designed ad-hoc. The questionnaire was distributed among qualified paddle tennis coaches in the Autonomous Community of Extremadura, obtaining a total participation of 228 technicians. The results indicated that 76 % of the coaches were injured during the last year, being the number of class hours per week and the years of experience determining factors. The location of the lesion (X2(3) = 38.647; p=.000; V=.601) determined the type of lesion. Thus, in the upper limb there was a higher percentage of tendon injuries (specifically in the elbow and shoulder), while in the lower limb there was a higher percentage of ligamentous injuries (especially ankle sprains). In addition, various studies were identified that include a series of preventive exercises, which reduce the risk of this type of injury. In conclusion, padel coaches should carry out prevention training, especially to avoid tendonitis in the upper limb and ligamentous injuries in the lower body.
Surgical societies provide a plethora of resources for trainees; however, these opportunities are often underused due to suboptimal guidance, sponsorship, or mentorship. Here, we present the Society ...of Asian Academic Surgeons (SAAS) experience in enhancing the trainee experience and engagement in a surgical society focused on professional development.
We conducted an interactive idea-generating session during the 2022 SAAS Conference with all Associate Members (trainees) present in Honolulu, HI. Recurrent themes, concepts, and ideas/suggestions were carefully considered when planning the next SAAS Conference in Baltimore, MD. We employed a more targeted approach to trainee engagement at the 2023 SAAS Conference, with breakout sessions geared toward various levels of trainees, in addition to increased social events and networking opportunities. We obtained feedback from trainees in attendance through an electronic survey and informal conversations with faculty and Associate Members.
Opportunities for surgical subspecialty networking was the most well-received portion of our formal Career Development program. The majority of trainees in attendance were medical students or junior residents who valued the exposure to junior faculty and those in leadership positions at academic institutions. The addition of a group text for easy communication among trainees and informal social activities for Associate Member networking among themselves were crucial in improving the overall conference experience.
Opportunities to maximize trainee engagement in surgical societies are heightened during in-person conferences. Targeted session topics, guided networking opportunities, and creating channels for easier communication along with more social events have enhanced the overall experience for aspiring and current surgical trainees.
•Trainee engagement behooves surgical societies and the learners themselves.•Helpful to have social events, targeted topics to level of training.•Connect trainees with sponsors and mentors through surgical societies.
It is an outdated notion that leaders are only those who manage a team, or call all the shots. There is increasing recognition in nursing that everyone – at every level – can demonstrate leadership ...and develop as a leader.
