Background: As COVID-19 occurs suddenly and is highly contagious, this will inevitably cause people anxiety, depression, etc. The study on the public psychological states and its related factors ...during the COVID-19 outbreak is of practical significance.
Methods: 600 valid questionnaires were received. The Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) and the Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) were used.
Results: Females' anxiety risk was 3.01 times compared to males (95% CI 1.39-6.52). Compared with people below 40 years old, the anxiety risk of people above 40 years old was 0.40 times (95% CI 0.16-0.99). SDS results indicated that the difference between education level and occupation was statistically significant (p = 0.024, 0.005). Compared to people with a master's degree or above, those with a bachelor's degree group had a depression risk of 0.39 times (95% CI 0.17-0.87). Compared with professionals, industrial service workers and other staff had a depression risk of 0.31 times (95% CI 0.15-0.65) and 0.38 times (95% CI 0.15-0.93).
Conclusions: 600 questionnaire participants were psychologically stable. Non-anxiety and non-depression rates were 93.67% and 82.83%, respectively. There were anxiety in 6.33% and depression in 17.17%. Therefore, we should pay attention to the psychological states of the public.
This study investigated the relation between psychological states and linguistic features with the case of Virginia Woolf. We analyzed the data from
and
by automatic text analysis and statistical ...analysis, including stepwise multiple regression and Deep Learning algorithm. The results suggested that the significant linguistic features can jointly predict the psychological states of Virginia Woolf, including the emotional value of
, the absolutist word "
," and the total of first-person plural pronouns. In addition, we found that the total use of first-person plural pronouns and the emotional value of
were negatively related to mental health of Virginia Woolf. While the use of the absolutist word "
" was positively related to mental health of Virginia Woolf. Meanwhile, we developed a model that can predict the psychological states of Virginia Woolf, with 86.9% accuracy. We discussed the findings and enumerated the limitations of this study at the end of the paper. The results not only complemented previous studies in the understanding of the relation between language and psychological health, but also facilitated timely identification, intervention, and prevention of mental disorders.
Internet addiction (IA) among teenagers has been reported frequently in China, although research has seldom focused on vocational high school students. This study investigated the prevalence and risk ...factors among this special adolescent population. Moreover, we illustrate the complex relationship between obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptoms, insomnia, psychological states, and IA.
A cross-sectional design was applied to collect information from three different vocational high schools in Hunan Province, China. Socio-demographic characteristics, OC symptoms, insomnia, depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms were compared between the IA and non-IA groups. Then, a structural equation model (SEM) was established to test our hypothesis regarding different paths from OC symptoms to IA.
IA prevalence was 13.4% among 7990 vocational high school students. Individuals with IA were more likely to be male and students with more severe depression, stress, anxiety, and insomnia symptoms (all p < 0.001). SEM verified that OC symptoms were related to IA both directly and indirectly, where the latter relationship was mediated through insomnia or mental disorders.
This study cannot confirm the causal relationships among the variables and should be generalized cautiously to other groups.
More attention should be paid to Chinese vocational high school students, especially those with more severe OC symptoms, poor mental health, and insomnia. We should consider OC symptoms, insomnia, psychological suffering, and IA together when addressing related problems.
The objective of this study is to examine the experiential quality of consumers to better understand the relationship impact on their perceived experiential psychological states and experiential ...outcomes in the retail industry. The data were collected from 548 consumers who completed purchasing items at one Bingo Box in Shanghai, indicating that the proposed model fitted the data. Results will assist retail management in developing and implementing self-service strategies to increase experiential quality and experiential psychological states in order to increase consumer perceptions of experiential outcomes.

Saving energy in workplaces provides a valuable opportunity to lessen energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. This article draws on stimulus-organism-response theory (SOR) to explore the ...impact of circumstance stimulus and internal psychological states on employee’s energy saving intention. Partial Least Square (PLS) was employed to examine the research model with 249 valid responses among Chinese office workers. Findings indicated that descriptive norms, organizational energy saving climate, and media publicity (i.e., stimulus) had a significant direct and positive impact on employee’s perceived energy saving responsibility and social pressure (i.e., organism). Moreover, the employee’s perceived energy-saving responsibility and social pressure had a significant positive impact on energy saving intention (i.e., response). This study drew theoretical implications for future energy saving research as well as managerial implications for organizations and policymakers.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between attentional impulsivity levels and physiological and psychological stress responses of university students.
300 university ...students participated in the study. Four different data collection tools were used in the study: a personal information form, the Physiological Stress Response Inventory, and the Attentional Impulsivity Part of Barratt Impulsiveness Scale.
We showed that attentional impulsivity of the participants is significantly related to both physiological stress responses (
= 0.04,
1;267 = 11.45,
< 0.05) and psychological stress responses (
= 0.04,
1;270 = 10.40,
< 0.05). At the same time, there is a significant negative association between physiological stress responses and psychological stress responses (
= -0.68).
The attentional impulsivity is an important variable for explaining changes in both physiological and psychological stress responses. Physiological and psychological stress responses should be considered as separate kinds of stress responses in stress response measurements.
In sales settings, negativity typically manifests in two forms. Negative psychological states (NpS), such as stress, burnout, and/or depression can result from sales activities. Negative sales ...behaviors are actions counter to the expected behaviors associated with the sales role. Both NpS and negative behaviors lead to reduced performance and disengaged employees. Yet, despite their importance, no single analysis of how these various negative topics are related exists. Thus, the present research utilizes the systematic literature review approach to investigate NpS and behaviors in sales settings. The present research contributes to the literature in four main ways, through: (1) explication of forty-nine salient constructs; (2) identification of NpS and behaviors construct roles in prior research; (3) systematic review of past research and trends; and (4) presenting a comprehensive set of future research opportunities.
Previous research mostly used simplistic measures and limited linguistic features (e.g., personal pronouns, absolutist words, and sentiment words) in a text to identify its author’s psychological ...states. In this study, we proposed using additional linguistic features, that is, sentiments polarities and emotions, to classify texts of various psychological states. A large dataset of forum posts including texts of anxiety, depression, suicide ideation, and normal states were experimented with machine-learning algorithms. The results showed that the proposed linguistic features with machine-learning algorithms, namely Support Vector Machine and Deep Learning achieved a high level of performance in the detection of psychological state. The study represents one of the first attempts that uses sentiment polarities and emotions to detect texts of psychological states, and the findings may contribute to our understanding of how accuracy may be enhanced in the detection of various psychological states. Significance and suggestions of the study are also offered.
This research aims at examining whether critical psychological states have an effect on teacher’s absenteeism and performance in underdeveloped areas of West Kalimantan Province. The research ...employed a survey approach involving 200 participants which were selected from 3058 total population. The participants were selected using a two-stage sampling technique. Questionnaires were distributed as the primary instrument of the research. The data then were analyzed by SEM (WarpPLS) analysis. The results indicated that (1) critical psychological states had a significant effect on absenteeism, (2) critical psychological states had a significant effect on performance, (3) critical psychological states did not have a significant effect on performance when mediated by absenteeism, and (4) critical psychological states did not significantly affect teacher’s performance in underdeveloped areas of West Kalimantan Province.
Many countries are taking strict quarantine policies to prevent the rapid spread of COVID-19 (Corona Virus Disease 2019) around the world, such as city lockdown. Cities in China and Italy were locked ...down in the early stage of the pandemic. The present study aims to examine and compare the impact of COVID-19 lockdown on individuals' psychological states in China and Italy. We achieved the aim by (1) sampling Weibo users (geo-location = Wuhan, China) and Twitter users (geo-location = Lombardy, Italy); (2) fetching all the users' published posts two weeks before and after the lockdown in each region (e.g., the lockdown date of Wuhan was 23 January 2020); (3) extracting the psycholinguistic features of these posts using the Simplified Chinese and Italian version of Language Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) dictionary; and (4) conducting Wilcoxon tests to examine the changes in the psycholinguistic characteristics of the posts before and after the lockdown in Wuhan and Lombardy, respectively. Results showed that individuals focused more on "home", and expressed a higher level of cognitive process after a lockdown in both Wuhan and Lombardy. Meanwhile, the level of stress decreased, and the attention to leisure increased in Lombardy after the lockdown. The attention to group, religion, and emotions became more prevalent in Wuhan after the lockdown. Findings provide decision-makers timely evidence on public reactions and the impacts on psychological states in the COVID-19 context, and have implications for evidence-based mental health interventions in two countries.
