The emergence of online social networks such as Facebook provide new opportunities for communication between archaeologists, and between archaeologists and communities. In this study, we used ...qualitative text analysis and conceptual metaphor analysis of conversations with eleven European archaeological Facebook site administrators to understand their motivations and ideas. We found that altruistic motivations coexist with emotional, career, and social capital expectations, that pseudo-archaeology and political weaponization of archaeology are major concerns, and that participants' conception of themselves and the archaeological Facebook sites they manage are based on multiple conceptual metaphors, revealing different, deliberative vs. agonistic, conceptions of social media community interaction, while top-down metaphors are contested by participatory, bottom-up metaphors, pointing to important dilemmas for the poetics and politics of contemporary public archaeology.
BaDACor is a database that contains a comprehensive inventory of archaeological sites located in the province of Córdoba, Argentina. The creation of this database was the result of a top-down ...approach, which involved the collaboration of decision-makers and professionals from the academic and state-governmental sectors. Furthermore, the database has also been utilised in a bottom-up approach, whereby interest groups and citizens concerned with heritage preservation have made use of it. This has been particularly important in light of the construction of Highway 38, which has resulted in damage to natural habitats and the destruction of territories of communities with traditional ways of life. Additionally, the construction of the highway has also endangered the integrity of ancestral territories loaded with symbolism for aboriginal communities. BaDACor has been employed in legal claims in cases of conflict with the state, and has proved to be an invaluable tool for heritage management. This is especially significant for local communities and indigenous groups who have historically had their heritage desecrated, destroyed, and hidden. The availability of BaDACor on different platforms has facilitated better access to information while also ensuring the preservation of digital data. The use of digital media has been reinforced through talks, conferences, and meetings with stakeholders to ensure that the voices of affected communities are heard in decision-making processes.

The role of a scientist is not only to build the ‘tower of knowledge,’ but also to make it beneficial to people. Therefore, archaeological projects should also vastly contribute to the promotion of the heritage of the region and its modern value and to the development of tourism, education and local community activities. Understanding the local community and its view on the historical heritage, as well as on archaeological research seems to be a very important aspect of this type of activity. It will not only allow to identify potential risks and create a plan of regular research, excavations, as well as future maintenance. As a benefit of the sociological study, the future revitalization of the area will occur. This outcome may be an important extension of theoretical and practical principles of global heritage protection and may become a standard solution based on the belief that cultural heritage can be a factor of local community development and prosperity.

The Public Archaeology of Treasure comprises the select proceedings of the 5th University of Chester Archaeology Student Conference which took place on 31 January 2020 in the lecture theatre of the ...Grosvenor Museum, Chester and was complemented by an online Twitter conference on the following morning, 1 February 2020. Reflecting on the shifting and conflicting meanings, values and significances for treasure in archaeology's public engagements, interactions and manifestations, the volume emphasises how education and research cannot avoid the persistent and evocative associations of 'treasure' in socio- political discourse and popular culture. This first-ever exploration of 'the public archaeology of treasure' thus offers a host of timely themes and perspectives on the public engagement with, and popular receptions of, archaeological artefacts and assemblages written by students, researchers, educators and heritage practitioners.
The following article aims to present the results of the valorization of two under tumuli monuments that are part of the Serra do Carvalho necropolis in Póvoa do Lanhoso. The work involved about a ...dozen volunteers, mainly inhabitants from the Póvoa do Lanhoso municipality, and consisted in the removal of the vegetation mantle, cutting trees rooted on top of the mounds and graphical recording of the archaeological structures. In addition to a detailed characterization of the tumuli, this project allowed the creation of a dynamic of heritage education and social awareness that fostered a better understanding and preservation of this type of monuments, often easily subject to destructive actions. Finally, all of this is taken as an opportunity to extend the discussion to another topic - the involvement between the Public and Archaeology.
This article examines how collaboration with Public Service Media structures the relationship between archaeologists and the public. To be able to understand such collaborations, we have studied an ...online news production by the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation, 'Always Viking', covering one week of excavating the recently discovered Viking ship at Gjellestad in Norway. The findings suggest that the journalists, even when doing an online-first production, mostly worked according to a broadcasting media logic, with few opportunities for the public to participate. In this, they prioritized the audience's 'perceived reality' over the archaeologists' 'referential reality' (Holtorf,
2007
: 151-52) to secure a broader reach. Some elements of the format supported more reciprocal audience participation, however, by combining a livestream with open and ongoing Q&A sessions. This opened for more unmediated, direct, and meaningful encounters between the archaeologists and the public. Overall, the study shows that the long and mutually beneficial collaboration between public service broadcasting and archaeology (Piccini,
2007
) can be strengthened by undertaking joint experimentation and exploration of participatory communication models online.
This article presents two case studies in which public archaeology was used to attempt to shift local perspectives on migration and migrants. The two archaeology projects, which took place in the ...United States and Sweden, emphasized participants' connections to places and shared experiences in the past rather than to ethnic groups in an attempt to combat the use of heritage and archaeological interpretations as a mechanism for xenophobia. Here we discuss our experiences with this form of social justice-oriented public archaeology, including identifying methods, observations, and approaches that can be adapted for other contexts, and explore the possibilities for archaeology to be used to address pressing and widespread concerns in society today.
This article presents an approach to guide the planning, development and evaluation of community archaeology. This will assist practitioners of all forms of community archaeology by providing a ...pathway to ethical practice that will benefit all. The approach focuses attention on four elements that are integral to community archaeology and which should always be considered: Who (the people involved); Why (their motivation); the Archaeology (in the broadest sense, including research questions and research methods); and How (the specific format the community engagement will take). This framework is applied to three case study community archaeology projects in Dorset, England, in order to demonstrate challenging examples of planned and reflexive community archaeology.
