Organophosphate, carbamate and pyrethroid pesticides are the most common insecticides used worldwide. They may cause chronic poisoning in farmers and acute poisoning in homicidal or suicidal cases. The determination of trace levels of these pesticides in human blood and urine is very challenging. This study focuses on a simultaneous quantitation method that was developed and validated for multi-class nine pesticides belonging to organophosphate, carbamate and pyrethroid classes in human blood and urine. Target pesticides were extracted from blood and urine using a modified QuEChERS (Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged and Safe) extraction method. Capillary column DB-35 ms (15 m × 0.25 mm, 0.25 µm) was used for chromatography with a 0.079 ml/min flow rate of carrier gas at constant pressure mode. Quantitation of sulfotep, phorate, carbofuran, chlorpyriphos, profenophos, triazophos, pyriproxyfen, lambda-cyhalothrin and permethrin was performed by mass spectrometer equipped with electron impact ionization source using selected ion monitoring (SIM) mode. The lower and upper limits of quantitation for all nine pesticides were 0.01 mg/L and 2.0 mg/dL respectively. The proposed method was proved to be simple, fast, sensitive, and robust. It has been applied to the analysis of 9 pesticides samples.
Monitoring of food products from animal origin for the presence of antimicrobial residues is preferably done using microbial screening methods because of their high cost-effectiveness. Traditionally ...applied methods fail to detect the maximum residue limits which were established when EU Council Regulation 2377/90 came into effect. Consequently, during the last decade this has led to the development of improved microbial screening methods. This review provides an overview of the efforts expended to bring antibiotic screening methods into compliance with EU legislation. It can be concluded that the current situation is still far from satisfactory.

By collecting real samples throughout the entire production process and employing chemometrics, metabolomics, and modern separation omic techniques, it unveiled the patterns of pesticide transfer during solid-state fermentation. The results indicated that 12 types of pesticide residues were prevalent during baijiu production, with organochlorine and carbamate pesticides being the most abundant in raw materials. After fermentation, organochlorine pesticides and pyrethroid pesticides exhibited higher content, while carbamate pesticides dominated in the final product. The pathways for pesticide input and elimination were identified, and the intricate mechanisms underlying these changes were further elucidated. Additionally, key control points were defined to facilitate targeted monitoring. The results indicated that pesticide residue primarily originates from raw materials and Daqu, whereas both solid-state fermentation and distillation processes were effective in reducing pesticide residues. The study offers valuable guidance for establishing pesticide residue standards in the context of baijiu production.

Since the Second World War the consumer behaviour in developed countries changed drastically. Primarily there existed the demand for sufficient food after a period of starvation, afterwards the ...desire for higher quality was arising, whereas today most people ask for safe and healthy food with high quality. Therefore a united approach comprising consistent standards, sound science and robust controls is required to ensure consumers' health and to maintain consumers' confidence and satisfaction. Chemical analysis along the whole food chain downstream (tracking) from primary production to the consumer and upstream (tracing) from the consumer to primary production is an important prerequisite to ensure food safety and quality. In this frame the focus of the following paper is the “chemical safety of meat and meat products” taking into account inorganic as well as organic residues and contaminants, the use of nitrite in meat products, the incidence of veterinary drugs, as well as a Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) system assessing (prioritizing) vulnerable food chain steps to decrease or eliminate vulnerability.
The updated definition of prebiotic expands the range of potential applications in which emerging xylooligosaccharides (XOS) can be used. It has been demonstrated that XOS exhibit prebiotic effects ...at lower amounts compared to others, making them competitively priced prebiotics. As a result, the industry is focused on developing alternative approaches to improve processes efficiency that can meet the increasing demand while reducing costs. Recent advances have been made towards greener and more efficient processes, by applying process integration strategies to produce XOS from costless lignocellulosic residues and using genetic engineering to create microorganisms that convert these residues to XOS. In addition, collecting more in vivo data on their performance will be key to achieve regulatory claims, greatly increasing XOS commercial value.
Plastic pollution is a global concern given its prevalence in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Studies have been conducted on the distribution and impact of plastic pollution in marine ecosystems, ...but little is known on terrestrial ecosystems. Plastic mulch has been widely used to increase crop yields worldwide, yet the impact of plastic residues in cropland soils to soil health and crop production in the long term remained unclear. In this paper, using a global meta‐analysis, we found that the use of plastic mulch can indeed increase crop yields on average by 25%–42% in the immediate season due to the increase of soil temperature (+8%) and moisture (+17%). However, the unabated accumulation of film residues in the field negatively impacts its physicochemical properties linked to healthy soil and threatens food production in the long term. It has multiple negative impacts on plant growth including crop yield (at the mean rate of −3% for every additional 100 kg/ha of film residue), plant height (−2%) and root weight (−5%), and soil properties including soil water evaporation capacity (−2%), soil water infiltration rate (−8%), soil organic matter (−0.8%) and soil available phosphorus (−5%) based on meta‐regression. Using a nationwide field survey of China, the largest user of plastic mulch worldwide, we found that plastic residue accumulation in cropland soils has reached 550,800 tonnes, with an estimated 6%–10% reduction in cotton yield in some polluted sites based on current level of plastic residue content. Immediate actions should be taken to ensure the recovery of plastic film mulch and limit further increase in film residue loading to maintain the sustainability of these croplands.

There is growing attention focused toward the problems of ecological sustainability and food safety raised from the abuse of herbicides, which underscores the need for the development of a portable ...and reliable sensor for simple, rapid, and user-friendly on-site analysis of herbicide residues. Herein, a novel multifunctional hydrogel composite is explored to serve as a portable and flexible sensor for the facile and efficient analysis of atrazine (ATZ) residues. The hydrogel electrode is fabricated by doping graphite-phase carbon nitride (g-C3N4) into the aramid nanofiber reinforced poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogel via a simple solution-casting procedure. Benefiting from the excellent electroactivity and large specific surface area of the solid nanoscale component, the prepared hydrogel sensor is capable of simple, rapid, and sensitive detection of ATZ with a detection limit down to 0.002 ng/mL and per test time less than 1 min. After combination with a smartphone-controlled portable electrochemical analyzer, the flexible sensor exhibited satisfactory analytical performance for the ATZ assay. We further demonstrated the applications of the sensor in the evaluation of the ATZ residues in real water and soil samples as well as the user-friendly on-site point-of-need detection of ATZ residues on various agricultural products. We envision that this flexible and portable sensor will open a new avenue on the development of next-generation analytical tools for herbicide monitoring in the environment and agricultural products.
Currently used pesticides (CUPs) represent one of the largest intentional inputs of potentially hazardous compounds into agricultural soils. Subsequently, pesticide residues (PRs) and their ...transformation products (TPs) persist in agricultural soils, occurring in diverse mixtures of compounds in various concentrations. In this study, measured environmental concentrations (MECs) of CUP residues and TPs, originated from previous growing seasons in agricultural soils of the Czech Republic, were used to characterize the environmental risk for agroecosystems. Toxicity exposure ratios (TERs) were calculated using predicted no-effect concentrations (PNECs) and MECs in order to identify single pesticide residues risk to in-soil invertebrates and microorganisms. Ecological risk assessment (ERA) for the mixtures of pesticide residues at each monitored site was assessed using a risk quotient (RQ) method and considering concentration addition among components in the mixtures. The compilation of ecotoxicity data to derived PNECs for in-soil organisms clearly showed data gaps mainly for triazine and chloroacetanilide TPs. In addition, chronic toxicity data for in-soil invertebrates at different trophic levels are not available for 30% of monitored CUPs. The ERA revealed that pesticide residues in soil pose a risk at 35% of the sites (RQ ≥ 1). Among measured pesticides, epoxiconazole, atrazine-2-hydroxy, carbendazim, dimoxystrobin, terbuthylazine and difenoconazole were the main contributors to the overall pesticide mixture toxicity. The measured levels of epoxiconazole together with the frequent presence in soils represent a risk for the agroecosystems. Further assessment of higher tiers of ERA should be considered and prioritized in the pesticides risk management.

: The impact of pesticide residues on human health is a worldwide problem, as human exposure to pesticides can occur through ingestion, inhalation, and dermal contact. Regulatory jurisdictions have ...promulgated the standard values for pesticides in residential soil, air, drinking water, and agricultural commodity for years. Until now, more than 19,400 pesticide soil regulatory guidance values (RGVs) and 5400 pesticide drinking water maximum concentration levels (MCLs) have been regulated by 54 and 102 nations, respectively. Over 90 nations have provided pesticide agricultural commodity maximum residue limits (MRLs) for at least one of the 12 most commonly consumed agricultural foods. A total of 22 pesticides have been regulated with more than 100 soil RGVs, and 25 pesticides have more than 100 drinking water MCLs. This research indicates that those RGVs and MCLs for an individual pesticide could vary over seven (DDT drinking water MCLs), eight (Lindane soil RGVs), or even nine (Dieldrin soil RGVs) orders of magnitude. Human health risk uncertainty bounds and the implied total exposure mass burden model were applied to analyze the most commonly regulated and used pesticides for human health risk control. For the top 27 commonly regulated pesticides in soil, there are at least 300 RGVs (8% of the total) that are above all of the computed upper bounds for human health risk uncertainty. For the top 29 most-commonly regulated pesticides in drinking water, at least 172 drinking water MCLs (5% of the total) exceed the computed upper bounds for human health risk uncertainty; while for the 14 most widely used pesticides, there are at least 310 computed implied dose limits (28.0% of the total) that are above the acceptable daily intake values. The results show that some worldwide standard values were not derived conservatively enough to avoid human health risk by the pesticides, and that some values were not computed comprehensively by considering all major human exposure pathways.
