Orienting patrons to library spaces, collections, and services is an important, but time-intensive, challenge for many librarians. Library tours are one strategy commonly employed to familiarize ...patrons with library spaces and services. Augmented reality provides a new opportunity for librarians to develop engaging and interactive unmediated tours. Augmented reality tours provide participants with an opportunity to explore library spaces and service points while affording librarians the chance to share valuable information about those spaces and services. This article details how one library constructed an augmented reality tour and shares assessment-based insights into participant responses to the augmented reality format.

In his 2013 article, Professor George Aulisio introduced the Weinberg Memorial Library’s Heritage Hunt, an interactive scavenger hunt designed to introduce first-year students to the library. Ten ...years later, the Heritage Hunt program still plays a critical role in library orientation at the University of Scranton. In this article, the authors discuss changes made in collaboration with multiple library departments to transform and ultimately improve the Heritage Hunt. The article will describe the adaptations made to the orientation program as it has evolved and will also share insights into how to expand the program to broaden its reach to students beyond their first year.

Scavenger hunts are an effective, fun way of orienting new students to the library. The low-tech nature and small scale of the scavenger hunt program described here might be more suitable for health ...sciences libraries than other models, particularly for libraries with small staffs. This model also includes a unique optional element useful for library marketing. This article describes the methods used, shares reactions of program participants, and provides suggestions for those considering orienting students in this way.

The University of the Pacific has been experimenting with QR codes in an ...innovative way: to introduce first-year music majors to the physical music library materials via a QR code scavenger hunt. This article discusses the library literature on QR codes and scavenger hunts, as well as the University of the Pacific's QR code scavenger hunt from creation to assessment. Additionally, recommendations are given for designing a similar pedagogical tool at your library.
