In "The Great School Rethink," education policy sentinel Frederick M. Hess offers a pithy and perceptive appraisal of American schooling and finds, in the uncertain period following pandemic ...disruption, an ideal moment to reimagine US education. Now is the time, he asserts, to ask hard questions about how schools use time and talent, how they work with parents, what they do with digital tools, and how they meet the needs of their communities. As Hess explains, to rethink is to acknowledge the realities of the education system while opening one's mind to possibility. With characteristic verve and wit, Hess guides readers through his rethink process, a versatile and easily implemented approach to identifying issues and brainstorming possible responses. He encourages readers to explore what improvements might alleviate current pressures and frustrations, such as teacher shortages and burnout, declining student performance, and compromised learning time. Whether their goal is to achieve better student engagement, increase parent involvement, or implement personalized learning, readers will develop the mindset to ask the right questions, to fully understand the problem that's being solved, and to evaluate the probable effectiveness of proposed solutions. Brimming with challenging questions, robust exercises, and eye-opening data, this book is a must-read for education professionals, parent advocates, and anyone passionate about the future of American education.
Stress is a demand made between the adaptive ability of the mind and body and the experience and resources available to cope with those demands and has become an epidemic in society and notably in ...educational settings. With the growing emphasis of overall wellbeing of students, few studies have focused on those who are in charge of the wellbeing of those students: school administrators. This study aimed to identify factors that impact stress in P-12 (Preschool-Grade 12) school administrators in South Dakota by administering the Administrative Survey Index (ASI). A total of N = 253 school administrators completed the survey. Initial results indicate that administrative constraints, interpersonal relations, and intrapersonal conflicts were the greatest sources of stress. Additionally, the degree to which an ASI item was a source of stress varied by administrators’ gender, occupational title, and grade range of students. The findings are discussed and future directions for research are presented.
The "firm-specific human capital dilemma" suggests that firms generally want employees to make firm-specific investments but that employees prefer not to make them. We suggest that individual ...performance may moderate this dilemma such that the dilemma increases as individual performance increases-that is, firms may prefer high performers in firm-specific roles while high performers may resist these roles more than their lower-performing counterparts. We examine our extended firm-specific human capital theory in a context in which the classic firm-specific human capital dilemma likely exists: business academia. Using a unique data set of 4,164 business school professors from 39 of the top 100 U.S. business schools, we examine how research performance affects propensity to become an associate dean and their compensation increases when taking on these roles. Even though associate dean roles come with a significant pay increase, we find that higher-performing individuals are less likely to become associate deans. Surprisingly, we find that lower performers receive higher pay increases when taking on these roles. We conduct exploratory interviews to understand this surprising finding, and discuss implications and opportunities for future research.
This systematic review used "science mapping" as a means of understanding the evolution of research in educational administration (EA). The review sought to document the size, growth trajectory, and ...geographic distribution of EA research, identify high impact scholars and documents, and illuminate the "intellectual structure" of the field. Although science mapping has been applied widely in science, medicine, and social sciences, it is still new in the field of education. The authors identified 22,361 peer-reviewed articles published in 22 Scopus-indexed EA journals between 1960 and 2018. The authors used VOSviewer, Excel, and Tableau software to analyze the data set. The review found that the E A knowledge base has grown dramatically since 1960 with an accelerating rate growth and increasing gender and geographic diversity during the past two decades. Using co-citation analysis, the review identified canonical documents, defined as highly influential documents whose impact has been sustained for a period of several decades. The review also identified four hey Schools of Thought that have emerged over time focusing on Leadership for Learning, Leadership and Cultural Change, School Effectiveness and School Improvement, and Leading Teachers. More broadly, our findings highlighted a paradigm shift from "school administration" to "school leadership" over the course of the six decades. Another significant finding identified "leadership for student learning and development" as the "cognitive anchor" of the intellectual structure of the EA knowledge base. The authors conclude that science mapping offers a new and useful means of unpacking the historical development of fields of study.
Published annually since 1985, the Handbook series provides a compendium of thorough and integrative literature reviews on a diverse array of topics of interest to the higher education scholarly and ...policy communities. Each chapter provides a comprehensive review of research findings on a selected topic, critiques the research literature in terms of its conceptual and methodological rigor and sets forth an agenda for future research intended to advance knowledge on the chosen topic. The Handbook focuses on a comprehensive set of central areas of study in higher education that encompasses the salient dimensions of scholarly and policy inquiries undertaken in the international higher education community. Each annual volume contains chapters on current important issues pertaining to college students and faculty, organization and administration, curriculum and instruction, policy, diversity issues, economics and finance, history and philosophy, community colleges, advances in research methodology and other key aspects of higher education administration. The series is fortunate to have attracted annual contributions from distinguished scholars throughout the world. For Volume 37, see ED619795.
There is an emerging crisis of confidence in management studies. This is expressed in growing disquiet about the lack of value in our research outputs and increasing frustration about the nature of ...teaching in business schools. This crisis of confidence can be understood as a response to a series of developments, including an apparent lack of practical or academic impact from most published research, a narrowing of focus in the field, increases in unethical behavior, the downgrading of teaching, and increased pressure in both publishing and teaching. Traditional academic values are coming into conflict with processes of rationalization in business schools and universities. The changes driving these outcomes are long-term and reflect powerful institutional pressures, rendering them difficult to change. Nonetheless, established management studies scholars have a responsibility to address them. One way they can show leadership in this regard is by setting a good example. Three suggestions can be made about how to do this: rejecting the fiction that what we do is analogous to laboratory science; rejecting the myth of what this essay calls "the heroic workaholic publishing machine;" and refusing to promote flawed approaches to assessing academic success.
This study aims to propose an educational administrative guide to enhance the role of public high school principals in Jordan in the field of environmental citizenship. The study used a survey method ...that is descriptive and evolutionary. The sample consisted of (123) principals and (598) teachers for the academic year 2017/2018. A questionnaire was developed that consisted of (49) items divided into three fields: participation and personal responsibility towards the environment, environmental justice and environmental awareness. The questionnaire was used following ensuring its validity and reliability. The study results showed that the degree of practice of public high school principals in Jordan for environmental citizenship was moderate. In light of the results, a proposed educational administrative guide was developed to enhance the role of public high school principals in Jordan in the field of environmental citizenship. which included three dimensions: air pollution, water pollution, and depletion of environmental resources. The study recommends the Ministry of Education to approve and implement the proposed guide with the schools’ principals to enhance the environmental citizenship among their students.
Empirical research suggests that school leaders' instructional leadership can make a difference in improving student achievement. We explored this issue in a mixed-method study that sought to verify ...whether or not, from participants' perspectives, school principals enact this type of leadership and whether or not they feel that it affects student outcomes. The research included a sample of top-level school leaders in a Portuguese region. We analyzed the data with descriptive statistics and content analysis techniques. Participants reported that most of principals' leadership practices did not focus on student learning, but rather on school administration and management. Many respondents felt that it was not their job to lead in several instruction-related areas. Furthermore, respondents regarded the impact of most of principals' instructional leadership practices on student achievement as weak. The paper discusses possible reasons for these findings, including the contextualized nature of the exercise of principal leadership roles, and suggests future avenues for research on this issue.
