FOULKE DANCE: RHP Keith Foulke's pay went from $445,000 to $3.1 million when he won his arbitration hearing last week. He deserved a boost but he also should be determined to improve on his ...performance from last season. His changeup made him a dominant stopper at times, yet he showed flashes of inconsistency. If Foulke falters, the team will give RHP Bob Howry another shot in the ninth inning.

Last week it was the Blue Jays who felt like bumpkins. Last Friday, Toronto general manager Gord Ash asked the commissioner's office to investigate the January deal that sent lefthander David Wells ...to the White Sox for lefthander Mike Sirotka, who Toronto says has a partially tom rotator cuff and a torn labrum in his pitching arm and could miss the 2001 season. (The day before, Sirotka had begun a two-week rehabilitation program after which he and team doctors will decide if he needs surgery.)

ROTATION VOID: With LHP Mike Sirotka ailing and his status on the team apparently in limbo because of the conflict with the White Sox over the trade, Toronto is without a starter. Hard-throwing RHP ...Roy Halladay, 23, gets the first opportunity to replace Sirotka. He's coming off a horrid sophomore season (4-7, 10.64 ERA) after showing much promise as a rookie (8-7, 3.92).

OUT WITH THE OLD: The team's six-player trade with the White Sox freed up money and basically replaced LHP David Wells, who turns 38 in May, with LHP Mike Sirotka, who turns 30 in May. Wells' ...second-half slide (5-6, 4.97 ERA), the wear on his arm (223 innings averaged over the past five seasons) and poor conditioning made the organization fear he might skid to the end of his career.
