This paper intended to analyze whether the library resources available for visually impaired students supported their academic process. In order to examine this issue, surveys and semi-structured ...interviews were conducted to cover the different perspectives and the familiarity of students with functional diversities, the teachers responsible for them, and the librarians in regard to these materials. Additionally, a document analysis was implemented to count the number of braille resources, classify, and collect data about accessibility and content that this material provides. The preliminary results displayed that the library has a lack of braille books in accordance with the number of blind students from different faculties that the same possesses. The following article discusses the implications this issue has for the academic process.
This research explains the development of a model for empowering coastal communities based on their professions using a socially inclusive library approach. The case study was conducted in Banten ...Lama, Kota Serang, Banten Province. The objective of this research is to find an appropriate model for empowering the community, tailored to the existing professions in coastal communities. The socially inclusive library approach is employed as a means to empower the community and improve their well-being. The research method used in this study is descriptive qualitative research, focusing on the functions and roles of libraries in increasing community engagement in terms of well-being. The findings of this research present a model for empowering coastal communities based on their respective professions. In the smallest context, the library is represented by a community reading park, which serves as an agent of change in the coastal community. The conclusion in this study is that the social inclusion-based library model is adapted to community professions adapted to the support of collaboration between regional libraries, village libraries and community reading library. In addition, this community empowerment model is described in three models according to the profession, namely the community empowerment model for the fisherman profession, the trade profession and the tour guide profession
•The research sheds light onto the gradual process of digital inclusion by creating a typology with three different types of people according to their level of digital inclusion, namely Advanced, ...Intermediate and Basic.•Our analysis shows the self-reinforcing effect of digital and social exclusion, by highlighting how, despite their access to the Internet, those people at risk of social exclusion are more likely to lack the digital experience necessary to fully exploit the possibilities the Internet can offer.•Those who tend to obtain more benefits from the use of the Internet are, on average, young, well-educated and with a higher income, thus reinforcing their already privileged social positions.•Socially vulnerable people have more difficulties in using digital technologies and gaining benefits from them, leading to further marginalisation of their position and deepening of inequalities.•By highlighting how different levels of digital inclusion are related to socioeconomic and sociodemographic features, this research contributes to reinforcing the idea that offline social structures and practices influence individuals’ ability to use digital technologies as an empowering tool of social inclusion.
Since an increasing number of daily activities are carried out online, an exclusion or limited access to the Internet prevent citizens from entering a world full of opportunities that cannot be accessed otherwise; in this sense, inclusion in the digital realm is strictly connected to social inclusion. Digital inclusion is not conceived as a mere dichotomy, access versus no access, but in terms of the degree to which e-inclusion improve wellbeing for individuals, community and society. Using a quantitative method based on a multivariate analysis, multiple correspondence analysis and cluster analysis, applied to a representative sample of UK citizens, this article sheds light onto the gradual process of digital inclusion, highlighting how social and digital inclusion are intertwined and how people who have one or more social or economic vulnerabilities are more likely to be in the group of those who are digitally excluded.
This book explores the concept of civic stratification and examines its contemporary relevance for analysis and understanding of the functioning of rights in society.
David Lockwood's (1996) concept ...of civic stratification outlines the way in which the rights associated with citizenship can be a source of inequality by virtue of their formal granting or denial by the state, or by informal impediments to their full realisation. The purpose of this book is to explore the meaning and significance of this concept, and elaborate its potential in offering a framework for understanding the dynamic nature of rights. Lockwood's model reverses Marshall's (1950) view of citizenship as guaranteed inclusion in society and is linked to the way that the differential entitlement and the qualifying conditions associated with certain rights can be harnessed as a means of control. While both Marshall and Lockwood were principally concerned with the rights attaching to citizenship, this book extends the insights of these two authors to show how such controls apply in various ways to both citizens and non-citizens alike. Building on Lockwood's conception of 'moral resources' the book set out a theoretical framework and empirical illustration of how the position of different groups within society is subject to shifting perceptions of social worth and is engaged both in claims to fuller access to rights and in justifications of their denial or removal.

Libraries can play a more role and can contribute in terms of community empowerment, closer, invite and empower the community. One way to get closer to the community is that the library can use the ...concept of inclusion to achieve its goals as a principle of lifelong learning. Inclusion-based libraries are libraries that facilitate the community in developing their potential by seeing cultural diversity, willingness to accept change, and offering opportunities to try, protect and fight for culture and human rights. This has been done by the Library of Science Resources in Marga Sakti Village, Musi Rawas Regency, with the concept of a Village Library Based on Social Inclusion, which has made the library an institution that can empower the community through productive activities such as making bitter melon chips, cultivating crickets, providing internet access for the community, Karang Taruna activities by establishing Youth Bands, PKK activities centered in libraries, storytelling activities, mobile libraries, establishing reading villages and others. Of the many activities above, this indicates that the library has become the central activity of the village community and as a concrete manifestation that the Marga Sakti Village Resource Library has implemented the concept of Social Inclusion.
This CEEMR special section examines encounters and interactions between migrants as newcomers and their hosts. Our exploration derives from harnessing, first, a sense of belonging and, second, social ...interactions as two interrelated processes of encounter. To the extent that the host develops a sense of belonging with the newcomers and cultivates social interaction with them as the others, the newcomers would become visible and encounters followed by meaningful interactions with them would be possible. To look at this from another perspective, the newcomers develop a sense of belonging with their hosts as they encounter them and engage in social interactions with them in their everyday. We note that there is ample research that takes a critical stance on integration and inclusion already but there is still space to explore encounters and interactions in greater detail and why they matter for newcomers and host societies to establish intimacies with each other.
Given the high numbers of refugees from Syria entering Germany in the recent years, the social integration of refugee youth has become an increasingly important issue in Germany. Thus, the current ...study examines adolescents' decisions and reasoning around the inclusion of Syrian peers in Germany. Using a hypothetical scenario, we assessed adolescents' (
= 100,
= 13.65 years, SD = 1.93, 51 females, 49 males) peer inclusion decisions and reasoning with attention to comparing inclusion of a Syrian refugee peer and a German peer. Given the importance of group norms for adolescents, we assessed not only adolescents' own inclusion decisions, but also what they would expect their peer group to decide and what they think their peer group
do. Moreover, adolescents' underlying reasoning was assessed. The analyses revealed that adolescents thought they would be more inclusive of a Syrian peer than a German peer and that their peer group should be more inclusive of a Syrian peer than a German peer. These tendencies toward including refugees were justified with references to morality as well as social-conventions. In contrast to their own decisions and to what they think their peer group
, participants expected their group would be more inclusive toward a German peer than a Syrian peer. This was mainly justified by referencing aspects of group functioning and psychological information about the peers, whereas moral and prosocial reasoning was very rarely used for the expected group decision. In sum, these findings document that adolescents in Germany wish to be inclusive regarding refugee peers and that they balance attention to morality and other domains of social reasoning when thinking about inclusion decisions while they expect that their peers will not consider morally relevant information when making these decisions. These findings have important practical implications as they indicate the importance of interventions that focus on promoting inclusive peer group norms.
The aim of this article is to gain knowledge about how people engaged in EU-funded social initiatives targeting poor EU migrants in Sweden reason about the meaning, hardships, and possibilities they ...ascribe to the concept of social inclusion. The empirical material consists of a key policy and interviews with staff involved in these social initiatives. The analytical approach is constructionist, inspired by Foucault, focusing on how target groups are constructed, problematised and governed as learners not yet socially included in society or the labour market. In the concluding discussion, the results are discussed in relation to Levitas’ thoughts on social inclusion. Key results indicate that discourses on the national and EU level can both facilitate and hinder learning and social inclusion for vulnerable citizens. The article concludes that free mobility within the EU makes belonging and responsibility a complex issue for those engaged in learning for social inclusion.
China's Yi minority community, once entrenched in severe poverty in remote southwestern regions, has undergone a transformation through the Poverty Alleviation Relocation Program. However, this ...program extends beyond mere relocation, as resettlers have encountered challenges assimilating into their new communities. Utilizing cross-sectional survey data collected in 2021 from Sichuan Province, this study examined the prevalence of social inclusion among resettled Yi minority members and analyzed factors associated with social inclusion post-resettlement. Results show that following resettlement, members of the Yi minority group experienced higher levels of psychological acceptance and social relationships but lower levels of economic inclusion and cultural adaptation. Participation in vocational training, access to the Internet, and maintaining good health were associated with increased social inclusion. Additionally, longer residency in the new community was linked to greater social inclusion, while no significant difference was observed between the relocation community and the original residence in terms of social inclusion. To enhance their integration into the new communities, efforts should focus on improving vocational and Mandarin language training, as well as increasing Internet accessibility.
