Racism persists, underscoring the need to rapidly document the perspectives and experiences of Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) groups as well as marginalized populations (eg, formerly ...incarcerated people) during pandemics.
This methods paper offers a model for using Public Health Critical Race Praxis (PHCRP) and related critical methodologies (ie, feminist and decolonizing methods) to inform the conceptualization, methods, and dissemination of qualitative research undertaken in response to the evolving COVID-19 pandemic.
Using purposive snowball sampling, we identified organizations involved with health equity and social justice advocacy among BIPOC and socially marginalized populations. Focus group participants (N=63) included community members, organizers, activists, and health workers.
We conducted topic-specific (eg, reproductive justice) and population-specific (eg, Asian and Pacific Islander) focus groups (N=16 focus groups) in rapid succession using Zoom software.
A self-reflexive, iterative praxis guided theorization, data collection and analysis. We obtained community input on study design, the semi-structured discussion guide, ethical considerations and dissemination. Applying PHCRP, we assessed our assumptions iteratively. We transcribed each interview verbatim, de-identified the data, then used two distinct qualitative techniques to code and analyze them: thematic analysis to identify unifying concepts that recur across focus groups and narrative analysis to keep each participant's story intact.
The praxis facilitated relationship-building with partners and supported the iterative assessment of assumptions. Logistical constraints included difficulty ensuring the confidentiality of virtual discussions.
These novel approaches provide an effective model for community-engaged qualitative research during a pandemic.
This study examines obstacles to sustainable development in the Islamic world through the lens of Islamic teachings and principles. Utilizing a qualitative research approach, this study selected ...relevant Islamic teachings on sustainability, cases of sustainable development in Islamic countries, and places facing specific challenges. Primary data were gathered from religious texts, while secondary data were collected from a comprehensive literature review, including the Quran, Hadith, and scholarly articles. The research process involves extensive literature review and data analysis through data reduction to identify key themes, with comparative analysis highlighting the differences and similarities between Islamic and non-Islamic countries' approaches. The key obstacles identified included corruption, social injustice, and wealth inequality. This study advocates for a comprehensive approach guided by scholars, policymakers, and local communities, involving the reinterpretation and implementation of Islamic values in development strategies. Education and awareness campaigns are proposed to empower individuals with the knowledge required to make ethical choices. By integrating scientific advancements with traditional wisdom, this study underscores the need to ensure that progress aligns with Islamic teachings of compassion, justice, and responsible stewardship.
In November 2011, Citizenship and Immigration Canada paused the parents/grandparents (PGP) sponsorship immigration and announced a new Super Visa program simultaneously to facilitate family ...reunification, specifically among older adults waiting to be reunified with their children in Canada. We conducted a qualitative study to understand the experiences of immigrant families with the Super Visa Program. In total, 19 semi-structured interviews were conducted in Toronto with Chinese immigrants and parents holding a Super Visa. Our findings revealed that Super Visa program is helpful for family reunification, especially for those whose regular visa applications are not successful. However, Super Visa is still a visitor visa and parents/grandparents have to leave after a maximum of two years. This temporary status of their parents does not promote among immigrants a sense of belonging in Canada, but reinforces their feeling of being treated as “foreigner”. They also debunked the stigma that older parents/grandparents come to Canada for better welfare and are non-contributor and a burden to Canadian society. We observe older parents/grandparents are categorized as “undesirable” and their unpaid contributions to immigrant family and Canada society are rendered invisible. We argue there exits an inherent link between PGP policy changes and social injustice. Behind the negative portrayal of older parents/grandparents and policy changes on them is State’s neoliberal governmentality grounded upon market norms and mechanism. The immigration and social injustice inflicting on older PGP migrants manifests that neoliberal immigration regime is still structurally raced, gendered, classed, and may be intertwined with other stigmatizing dynamics such as ageist, ableist etc. within the State’s power relationship.
SOCIAL JUSTICE issues can occur in relation to practically any aspect of society where inequality can arise as a result of unjust prejudices or policies. Social justice issues can be delineated into ...two categories, although they are often co-dependent: Inter-Social Treatment and Unequal Government Regulation.
The subject of this paper is a continuation of the discussion initiated by Milan M. Ćirković. Ćirković criticized a number of arguments skeptical of the idea of space settlement. However, he omitted ...arguments referring to social justice and equal access, which, as this paper tries to show, are arguably the most serious skeptical remarks against the idea of space colonization. The paper emphasizes that both space exploration and, ultimately, potential space colonization run the risk of exacerbating inequality and, as such, are not projects pursued for all of humanity.
•One of the most serious arguments against the concept of space settlement are social arguments.•These arguments refer to justice, equality and equal access to space.•Reflection on the concept of space settlement should take into account the reality of the “racial contract”.
The COVID-19 pandemic has taken an enormous global toll, including loss of life, economic upheaval, and social disruption. This strong induction of effects across both societal and individual levels ...provides opportunities for testing fundamental assumptions within biopsychosocial phenomena that would not have been otherwise possible—or at least not ethical—through human-induced experimental designs. Our special issue spotlights research within psychological science that has stayed in step with the complex set of events we refer to as “the pandemic.” We review articles with novel approaches that speak to the variable effects of pandemic experiences across different groups of people, the impact of the pandemic on social support and social infrastructures, and the inequities and violations of justice that the pandemic has revealed. We conclude by highlighting future directions for psychological research.
Abstract
Since the presidential election of 2016, bias-related incidents, hate-filled rhetoric, and extremist violence have been increasing in the United States. Because social workers are often ...working with individuals and communities affected by these incidents, practitioners may have increasing responsibility to confront social injustice and oppression. However, limited evidence on the preparedness of social workers to assume this responsibility, particularly among those who are still students, exists. To address this gap, this study used focus group and survey data from the Diversity and Oppression Scale to explore the preparedness of MSW students (N = 22) to confront oppression. Six themes were identified as integral to student experiences in their programs: (1) social worker responsibility to confront oppression, (2) use of dominant group discourse on oppression, (3) variation in faculty preparation and comfort, (4) a focus on knowledge of oppression versus skills and process, (5) role of personal responsibility and experience in student preparation, and (6) strategies to increase student preparedness to confront oppression. Factors identified to enhance students’ level of preparedness include faculty opportunities for development, changes to the explicit and implicit curriculum, and creating a formalized way to integrate topics on oppression and diversity into all facets of the curriculum.

The objective of this short paper is to call upon the scientific community to channel its attention to the duty and heedfulness of social justice issues. While recognized for decades the impact of ...social injustice on public health and its disproportionate effects on poorer communities, little has been done to systematically address it. Here, we provide several examples pertinent to the health outcomes associated with social injustice and call upon the scientific community to attend to the issue and antagonize those who attempt to subvert science and its role in ensuring social justice in health.
•Where we live, work, play, and attend school will influence our health.•Relationships between social injustice and environmental health have been well documented.•Significant racial disparities persist even after controlling for other risk factors.•Achieving environmental justice necessitates greater awareness of the costs of environmental hazards.•We must harness the will and courage to mitigate exposures to hazardous chemicals.
