Administering Justice examines the leadership role of chief justices in the American states, including how those duties require chief justices to be part of the broader state political environment. ...Vining and Wilhelm focus extensively on the power of chief justices as public spokespersons, legislative liaisons, and reform leaders. In contrast to much existing research on chief justices in the states, this study weighs their extrajudicial responsibilities rather than intracourt leadership. By assessing the content of State of the Judiciary remarks delivered over a period of sixty years, Vining and Wilhelm are able to analyze the reform agendas advanced by chief justices and determine what factors influence the likelihood of success. These analyses confirm that chief justices engage with state politics in meaningful ways and that reactions to their proposals are influenced by ideological congruence with other political elites and the scope of their requests. Administering Justice also examines the chief justice position as an institution, provides a collective profile of its occupants, and surveys growing diversity among court leaders.

Centrado en un análisis acerca del papel otorgado por el Banco Mundial al Estado en los procesos de desarrollo a partir de los años noventa, el trabajo destaca la notable continuidad exhibida por las ...propuestas del de desimplicar al Estado de los procesos productivoindustríales. Además, fundados en la experiencia argentina de los noventa, se presentan evidencias de dos claras inconsistencias mostradas por las políticas inspiradas en dicha continuidad: a) el constante crecimiento del Estado a partir de reformas paradójicamente orientadas hacia su reducción; b) el vaciamiento de las estructuras y capacidades estatales del área productivo-industríal, cuya existencia el demanda como condición para habilitar políticas industríales complejas. Por último, se aborda el escenario latinoamericano para reflexionar acerca de cómo las mencionadas inconsistencias contribuyen a explicar el retroceso estructural de la región en el contexto global. Focusing on an analysis of the role provided to the State by the World Bank in development processes since the 1990s, this paper emphasizes the noteworthy continuity exhibited by the WB's proposals to separate the State from any involvement in industríal production processes. Based on Argentina's experience in the 1990s, evidence is also presented of two clear inconsistencies shown by policies inspired by such continuity: a) the constant growth of the State starting with the reforms that were paradoxically oriented towards its reduction; b) the emptying of state structures and capacities in the industríal production area, whose existence the WB demands as a condition for enabling complex industríal policies. Finally, it deals with the Latin American scenario to reflect on how the mentioned inconsistencies contribute to and explain structural reversal in the region in a global context. Centré sur une analyse sur le rôle octroyé par la Banque Mondiale à l'Etat dans les processus de développement à partir des années 90, ce travail souligne la notable continuité démontrée par les propositions de la de désimpliquer l'Etat des processus productifs-industriels. En plus, se basant sur l'expérience argentine des années 90, on dégage deux claires inconsistances montrées par les politiques inspirées sur la dite continuité: a) la croissance constante de l'Etat à partir de réformes paradoxalement orientées vers sa réduction; b) le vide progressif des structures et des capacités de l'Etat dans le domaine productif-industriel, dont l'existence est exigée par la comme condition pour habiliter des politiques industrielles complexes. En una época de aparente consenso liberal, el resurgimiento en Europa de la derecha radical ha sido uno de los sucesos más desconcertantes de las tres últimas décadas. A raíz de esto, la derecha ...radical ha sido un tema frecuente, pero muy poco se ha dicho sobre su lenguaje. Este olvido se debe a que, por lo general, se ha visto a este tipo de movimientos como fenómenos esporádicos, que aparecen sólo en momentos de crisis para interrumpir la normalidad democrática. Su discurso suele tacharse de irascible, opuesto a la razón liberal, de modo que no hace falta comprenderlo, basta condenarlo. Este libro ofrece un panorama muy distinto. Aquí se analiza con detenimiento el lenguaje de la derecha radical, para descubrir la lógica detrás de sus metáforas y mitos, su peculiar racionalidad. Es un discurso intranquilizador, pero más familiar de lo que suele aceptarse: desde sus orígenes, en el último tercio del siglo XIX, ha acompañado siempre a las democracias europeas. La derecha radical se presenta, más que como patología que curar, como un síntoma: su lenguaje expresa y se alimenta de las contradicciones de la democracia liberal.
