45 kindergarten and 45 second-grade children were administered the Matching Familiar Figures test (MFF) along with standard conservation of number and amount tests. 10 days later the MFF was ...readministered to 3 experimental groups matched on initial MFF performance. 1 group received instructions emphasizing the importance of accuracy, for another the importance of response speed was emphasized, and for the third "doing one's best" was emphasized. Significant main effects for grade, cognitive style, and condition were found. Significantly more second-grade than kindergarten children were able to modify their performance appropriately according to directions and significantly more fast-accurate than reflective children appropriately modified their performance. Results were interpreted as suggesting that during the early school years children learn to modify information-processing tempo appropriately according to situational demands. In addition, with the kindergarten sample a significant relationship between cognitive tempo and conservation was observed, with a greater number of reflective than impulsive children demonstrating conservation abilities.
MAGDEBURG, Germany- Traditionally, manufacturing engineers have manually timed assembly procedures to improve ergonomics, reduce waste and increase productivity. "... every individual movement has ...usually been timed by someone with a stopwatch or with digital time boards manned by employees," says Martin Woitag, research manager at the Fraunhofer IFF.
3 experiments are presented which examine the ability of 10-month-old infants to search in a new hiding place. The experiments showed that infants of this age can search correctly, but that errors ...are more likely if a delay is introduced and if cues previously associated with finding the object distract the infant after its disappearance into a new hiding place. A hypothesis of proactive interference in short-term memory is proposed to explain the above results and other findings reported in the literature.

This paper presents three boiling experiments that can be integrated in the undergraduate heat transfer laboratory. The objective of these experiments is to enhance the understanding of boiling ...process by undergraduate mechanical engineering students. These experiments expose the students to several important concepts in boiling, such as subcooled boiling, modes of pool boiling, and Leidenfrost Phenomenon. The experimental setup and apparatus required to carry out these experiments is simple. It includes a metallic plate such as brass, stainless steel or aluminum, a heating source such as a Hot Plate, thermocouples, a stopwatch, a liquid dropper, and a camera. These equipments are inexpensive and available in almost all undergraduate heat transfer laboratories. I. Introduction Boiling and condensing processes play an important role in a large number of practical engineering applications, such as the production of electrical power from vapor cycles, production of refrigeration, and the design of petrochemical processes (such as the refining of petroleum and the manufacture of chemicals). Boiling and condensing are vapor-liquid phase change processes where fluid motion is involved. Due to this fact, boiling and condensing are classified as convective mechanisms. However, there are major differences between these mechanisms and single phase convective heat transfer. This is because there are significant differences between the various fluid properties in the two phases, such as conductivity, specific heat, and density. Also, there is a consumption or release of latent heat hfg which influences the heat transfer rates greatly during phase change. Both boiling and evaporation are liquid-to-vapor phase change processes, but there are major differences between the two. Evaporation process occurs at the liquid-vapor interface when the vapor pressure pv is less than the saturation pressure psat of the liquid at a given temperature. And evaporation does not involve bubble formation or bubble motion. Examples of evaporation are the evaporation of sweat to cool the human body and the drying of fruits and cloths. On the other hand, boiling occurs at the solid-liquid interface when the temperature of the surface is maintained at a temperature Ts that exceeds the saturation temperature Tsat corresponding to the pressure of the liquid that is in contact with the surface. The boiling process is characterized by

On a given Saturday, our four classes might be measuring stress and strain factors on a student-designed cable-stayed bridge, using Python to develop a personalized computer hangman game, testing the ...effect of wingspan variance on model planes flown in Johnson Athletic Center, and investigating the circuitry of a soda-vending machine (yes, sometimes there are samples). With endless requests for duct tape, stopwatches, X-Acto knives, goggles, and Play-Doh, sometimes it seems more as if I am on Let’s Make a Deal than at MIT. Because our students participate in the program for seven semesters, they grow up with us. “No one is considered an outcast in SEED’s social environment,” wrote a student in a program evaluation.
Many of the technology students in the first two years do not understand how the coursework is applied in the practice of engineering. These courses introduce engineering students to the type of ...tasks they are expected to handle on the job after graduation. Courses in automated manufacturing including computer numerical control (CNC) machining, materials handling, time and motion study, etc. should be designed to provide students hands on training towards their professional goals. The objective of this project is to manufacture a product using a complete manufacturing system. It includes manufacturing processes such as machining, materials handling, assembly, and inspection. The project also involves time and motion study, flow process charts, and operation sheets as usually required in an industrial production operation. The sample project presented here deals with the manufacturing of a shuttle selector manifold in an industry environment. The manifold was manufactured by a group of students in a local manufacturing company. Methods engineering and work measurements functions were performed wherever possible. The manifold is designed to work on hydraulic systems using petroleum based fluid up to 3000 psi. Mechanical and manufacturing technology students are expected to be proficient in and be familiar with broad based manufacturing subjects. One of the most important and demanding requirements should be their familiarity with the state of the art technology including manufacturing processes such as CNC machining, materials handling, assembly, and inspection and testing. In the course of this project, students get an exposure to not only the design and machining aspects but also get into methods engineering and motion time measurements. This project assignment include product design, CNC programming for a milling machine, and prototype manufacturing. In the course of this project students were required to prepare standard process sheets, flow process charts, standard method sheets for operation, stopwatch observation sheet, and videotaping of the manufacturing processes for motion time measurements. - $iit@ 1996 ASEE Annual Conference Proceedings ‘.JEJIIII’.? .
