Aug. 12--At first blush, Fort Zachary Taylor State Park seems a peaceful, quiet respite from the increasingly hectic pace of Key West. Tall trees whisper in the wind and a gentle turquoise sea laps ...the white sand. People move slowly, if at all. But there's a war going on here that pits residents against the Florida Park Service. This collection of people, many of whom consider themselves environmentalists, is opposed to what they say is the overall increased commercial use of their favorite local hideaway. "It's really the only area for residents, and we're here all year," said Glorianne Straza, a massage therapist in Key West. "I thought state parks are more here for the residents." In recent months, a group called Save Our Pines garnered countywide attention when it got the support of the Monroe County Commission in asking the state to consider not only preserving existing Australian pines in the park, but nurturing seedlings. Officials completed a management plan for the park in 1999. It included a stipulation that all exotic plant species, including the pines, would be removed. Three ago, the Save Our Pines folks won a victory when the state agreed to allow the trees to be weeded out through attrition.
