Reached separately by phone on Wednesday, Stacy Medina and Dale Strahs agreed LeRoy Johnson has never stopped calling, even as other council members have called for his resignation, a resident-backed ...recall effort has sought to force him from office and she has told him repeatedly they will never be together again. The couple said Medina has switched cell phones twice and terminated a home phone, leaving only her office phone with a voice mail Johnson has repeatedly filled to capacity. The messages can be mellow, filled with shouting or mottled by crying, Medina said. Sometimes, the couple said, Johnson talks about the weekend he enjoyed with Medina, when she was out of town with Strahs. Strahs said Johnson could be trying to make him jealous, but he thought it was more than that.

In an interview, Ed Strahs, director of IT at Kwik Trip Inc, talked about what it takes technologically to keep a diverse operation linked and efficient. He said that one thing about Kwik Trip is ...that the company is committed to technology, from President Don Zietlow all the way down. They do everything internally that they possibly can. Their main platform is an iSeries (IBM) 400, and they develop all their business applications on that. He added that they have their own maintenance group that is part of his department, so that any PCs, printers and peripheral equipment that they have in their stores are all maintained in-house. He also said that they installed a voice picking system in their warehouse -- they used a third-party vendor, but they had to do all the interfaces into that system to be able to pick by voice.
The plan is designed to expand the reach of the Delaware River Port Authority, a low-profile agency that now oversees four bridges and a high speed rail line between New Jersey and Philadelphia. It ...would turn the authority into a more powerful entity capable of coordinating port activity and fostering regional economic development, much like its counterpart on the Hudson River, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. That was not the intention when it was created by Congress in 1952, according to Joseph Diemer, an authority spokesman. Mr. Diemer said the 40-year-old enabling legislation permits the authority to take on port projects, but only if they are approved by both the New Jersey and Pennsylvania legislatures. Navigating both obstacles has proven too unwieldy for the authority, which as a result has never gotten involved in port projects, Mr. Diemer said. Ports along the Delaware River are among the busiest in the Northeast, mainly because seven refineries in the region import a large amount of oil every year, Mr. Diemer said. Counting oil, about 75.5 million tons of cargo moved through the ports in 1990. That compares to 54.2 million tons for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. A more common measure of activity is "general cargo" like steel, paper, and food. In that category, the Delaware River region handled about 6.5 million tons, compared to New York and New Jersey's 13 million tons.
