In three studies, we found that reading information in a foreign language can suppress common superstitious beliefs. Participants read scenarios in either their native or a foreign language. In each ...scenario, participants were asked to imagine performing an action (e.g., submitting a job application) under a superstitious circumstance (e.g., broken mirror, four-leaf clover) and to rate how they would feel. Overall, foreign language prompted less negative feelings towards bad-luck scenarios and less positive feelings towards good-luck scenarios, while it exerted no influence on non-superstitious, control scenarios. We attribute these findings to language-dependent memory. Superstitious beliefs are typically acquired and used in contexts involving the native language. As a result, the native language evokes them more forcefully than a foreign language.

Collingwood’s treatment of magic relies on his defense of emotion in rational life, which, in turn, engages with his philosophy of history. He did not think of magic as irrational or superstitious; ...he saw it as a thoughtful, practical effort to bring ambivalent emotions under control in order to sustain human life. Magic as such was not superstitious, and superstition could not be eliminated by progress in strengthening the faculty of reason. Collingwood recognized reason’s finitude in order to reject naïve confidence in historical progress, and he made magic a new point of orientation for his broader conception of the philosophy of history.
Yazar, gazeteci, milletvekili ve Batıcılık fikrinin savunucusu Kılıçzâde Hakkı (öl. 1960), Türk düşünce tarihinde önemli bir yere sahiptir. Kılıçzâde, yazılarında devletin ilerlemesi için yapılması ...gerekenleri ismiyle müsemma şekilde savaşırcasına anlatır. Yazar hakkındaki çalışmaların ekserisi kitapları ve makaleleri hakkındadır. Oysa Kılıçzâde Hakkı, gerilemenin en büyük sebebi olarak gördüğü batıl inançlarla savaşını, kurgusal zemine taşıyarak hikâyeleştirmiştir. Kılıçzâde hakkındaki çalışmalarda söz konusu hikâyelere değinilmekle birlikte ayrıntılı bir değerlendirme yapılmamıştır. Bu makalede Kılıçzâde Hakkı’nın İçtihad ve Hürriyet-i Fikriyye dergilerinde yayımlanan sekiz hikâyesi incelenmiştir. Yazarın hikâyelerinde batıl gördüğü, dinî ve toplumsal inanışlarla olan mücadelesi dikkat çekmektedir. Çalışmanın amacı makalelerinde de benzer konuları işleyen Kılıçzâde’nin fikrî eserlerinde başlattığı mücadelesini fiktif yapıya taşıdığını göstermek, yazarın düşüncelerini açıklamada kurguyu kullanılışını örneklendirmektir. Çalışmanın yöntemi şu aşamalarda ilerlemiştir: yazarın hikâyeleri tespit edilmiş, Latin alfabesine aktarılmış, makaleleriyle hikâyeleri arasındaki benzer noktalar bulunmuştur. Bu dikkatle çalışma üç başlık altında ele alınmıştır. Söz konusu sekiz hikâyeden evlilik hakkındakiler “Dest-i İzdivaca Talip miyiz?”, toplumdaki dindarlık ve dinsizlik algısının eleştirildiği hikâyeler “Dinsizlik Alametleri”, Yunus Hoca hakkındaki hikâyeler ise “Sahte Softalığın Simgesi: Yunus Hoca” başlıkları altında değerlendirilmiştir. Kılıçzâde Hakkı’nın aile mefhumuna büyük kıymet verdiğini yazılarından takip etmek mümkündür. “Dest-i İzdivaca Talip miyiz?” başlığı altında işlenen hikâyelerde düğün eğlenceleri, eşlerin birbirini tanıyarak evlenmelerinin önemi, evlenme ve boşanma işlemlerinin nasıl olması gerektiği, örnek aile temsili ele alınır. “Dinsizlik Alametleri” başlığında incelenen hikâyelerde ise toplum tarafından dinsizlik yaftasına maruz kalan ailelerin dine dair tutumu işlenmiştir. Sahte softalarla pek çok cephede savaşmayı kendine görev edinen Kılıçzâde Hakkı, bu savaşını kurguya taşımıştır. Makalenin üçüncü kısmı “Sahte Softalığın Simgesi: Yunus Hoca”nın maceralarının anlatıldığı üç hikâyeden müteşekkildir.Yunus Hoca üzerinden din adamı vasfına talip ve sahip kişilerde bulunmaması gereken özelliklerin anlatıldığı hikâyelerin ilkinde Yunus Hoca’nın ataları; ikincisinde medrese talebeliği, üçüncüsünde bir kadınla giriştiği münakaşa tahkiye edilir. Bu değerlendirmeler ışığında Kılıçzâde Hakkı’nın hikâyelerinin aile ve din mefhumları üzerinde yoğunlaştığı görülmüştür. Bununla birlikte Kılıçzâde’nin fikrî eserlerindeki meseleleri, fiktif yapıda da işlediği ve Batıl itikatlarla bir de edebiyat cephesinde savaştığı anlaşılmıştır.
In this paper, we analyse the five steps of the evidence-based practice (EBP) model and argue that this model has serious limitations, both theoretical and practical. We argue that the relationship ...between evidence and practice cannot be that of supplying a basis, at least not if that notion is understood in any strict logical or methodological sense. Other factors have to be taken account of in addition to evidence and their relation to the evidence has to be explained. Following others, we advocate a more comprehensive view of practice as informed by evidence and theory. Evidence-informed practice (EIP) should be understood as excluding non-scientific prejudices and superstitions, but also as leaving ample room for clinical experience as well as the constructive and imaginative judgements of practitioners and clients who are in constant interaction and dialogue with one another. Under the EIP model, there is no need for the five-steps procedure of the EBP model, but only that practitioners will become knowledgeable of a wide rang of sources—empirical studies, case studies and clinical insights—and use them in creative ways throughout the intervention process.
This study aims to describe the patterns, functions, and ethical values in the superstition of pregnant women in the Kubuang Tigo Baleh community. This research is a type of qualitative research, ...data collection techniques carried out by observation and unstructured interviews with informants. Data analysis technique was conducted in three stages, namely data reduction, data display, and conclusions. The results of this study indicate that: the superstition of pregnant women Kubuang Tigo Baleh community is a means of educating behavior, the superstition of pregnant women Kubuang Tigo Baleh community is associative, and the superstition of pregnant women Kubuang Tigo Baleh community is always created through the context of events. Therefore, it can be concluded that the superstition of pregnant women in Kubuang Tigo Baleh community is an expression of local wisdom in directing behavior, actions, and ethics

In this short article, we took a look at the importance of rituals in sports. First we explained the concepts of religion, creed, superstitions, fallacies and rituals. Then we described superstitious ...thinking and religiosity in psychological terms and on this basis we referred to rituals in sport. We explained the meaning of rituals in sport based on our own professional experiences with athletes. This article is an introduction for conducting a pilot study.
