Introduction:Parallel to worldwide disparities in patient access to health care, the operative opportunities of surgical trainees are increasingly restricted across the globe. Efforts have been ...directed toward enhancing surgical education outside the operating room and reducing the wide variability in global trainee operative experience. However, high costs and other logistical concerns may limit the reproducibility and sustainability of nonoperative surgical education resources. Methods:A partnership between the academic, nonprofit, and industry sectors resulted in the development of an online virtual surgical simulator for cleft repair. First year global access patterns were observed. Results:The simulator is freely accessible online and includes 5 normal and pathologic anatomy modules, 5 modules demonstrating surgical markings, and 7 step-by-step procedural modules. Procedural modules include high-definition intraoperative footage to supplement the virtual animation in addition to include multiple-choice test questions. In its first year, the simulator was accessed by 849 novel users from 78 countries; 70% of users accessed the simulator from a developing nation. Conclusion:The Internet shows promise as a platform for surgical education and may help address restrictions and reduce disparities in surgical training. The virtual surgical simulator presented may serve as the foundation for the development of a global curriculum in cleft repair.
Social inequalities are intensifying the initiatives in which the providence State is requested to find solutions and tools to improve the social impact. In this perspective, the Management and ...Entrepreneurship fields assume a huge relevance in Social Innovation and Social Entrepreneurship areas. Considering that, Manzini (2015) suggests that the most efficient model for fighting social inequalities within a vulnerable community is to involve them in the process when solving social problems through a project development. Focus on Manzini’s proposal and having in mind the beneficiaries’ involvement in this kind of initiative a question emerged: What is the role of the beneficiary's involvement as a critical success factor in development of Social Innovation projects? To answer, it was carried out a narrative literature review that guided the action of a case study analysis matrix following these parameters: i) business model; ii) public funding dependency; iii) Involvement levels of beneficiaries and iv) business sustainability/ longevity. Seven social entrepreneurship projects were analysed. The results and discussion section led to concluding that a correlation between longevity and beneficiaries’ involvement exists. Also, the design of initiatives’ business models that consider their involvement, influence positively the longevity and the sustainability of a social initiative.
This essay examines links, similarities, and dissimilarities between stakeholder theory and sustainability management. Based on the analysis a conceptual framework is developed to increase the ...applicability and the application of stakeholder theory in sustainability management. Concluding from the analysis, we identify three challenges of managing stakeholder relationships for sustainability: strengthening the particular sustainability interests of stakeholders, creating mutual sustainability interests based on these particular interest, and empowering stakeholders to act as intermediaries for nature and sustainable development. To address these challenges three interrelated mechanisms are suggested: education, regulation, and sustainability-based value creation for stakeholders.

The “business case for sustainability” is a notion often referenced in the corporate sustainability and corporate social responsibility literature. Whereas some see sustainability and the business ...case as contradictions and thus emphasize the existence of trade-offs, others highlight how (potential) business cases can be created by managing ecological, social, and economic aspects. Both views have in common that the “business case” is implicitly or explicitly seen as creating financial performance, often for one group of stakeholders, only. The fact that a business case is not a given phenomenon but has to be co-created in the exchange between and with contributions from various stakeholders has so far not been analysed in depth. By taking a stakeholder theory perspective, this article extends the existing research on what business and a business case are about and analyses the understanding of business cases for sustainability and how they can be created with and by stakeholders.
