In order to explore the effects of prosocial behavior, teacher's attitudes towards bullying, and classroom climate on peer victimization, we collected data from 1,221 students (M
age
= 13.60, SD = ...0.88) from 47 classrooms and their teachers from three middle schools in Beijing, China. The hierarchical linear modeling was used to examine the effect of the classroom climate at both the individual and classroom levels, and the interactions between classroom climate and students' prosocial behavior, as well as student perceptions of teachers' attitudes towards bullying. Results showed that prosocial behaviors, teachers' negative attitudes towards bullying, and authoritative classroom climate (at both individual and classroom levels) predicted less peer victimization. We also found significant cross-level interactions (classroom climate * student perceptions of teachers' attitudes towards bullying and classroom climate * prosocial behavior) in predicting peer victimization. Specifically, student perceptions of teachers' attitudes predicted peer victimization only when the overall authoritative classroom climate was high, or when the classroom-level teacher support was high. Students' prosocial behavior only predicted peer victimization when there was less peer support in the classroom. These findings shed light on the intricate interplay between individual level and classroom level protective factors on peer victimization among Chinese middle school students.
Impact Statement
This is the first study examining classroom climate and its interaction with prosocial behavior and teachers' attitudes towards bullying to predict victimization among Chinese middle school students. Findings shed light on the intricate interplay between individual level and classroom level protective factors on peer victimization among Chinese middle school students.
Teachers' beliefs and attitudes are known to guide the type of activities they implement in their classrooms. A traditional conception that finger counting is merely a back-up when children fail to ...use more sophisticated and efficient strategies could therefore prevent teachers from encouraging children's use of fingers in arithmetic tasks. However, the potential benefit of finger counting for young learners has been recently documented and setting aside its practice within classrooms may hinder children's mathematical skill development. It is therefore important to establish whether there is a discrepancy between teacher's beliefs regarding finger counting and the latest discoveries in this field of research. To this aim, we interrogated 413 teachers from preschool to Grade 5. We found that, despite being generally positive towards finger counting, teachers think that finger counting is typical of children who present math difficulties or lack of confidence, even during the first years of learning. These results are discussed considering what is known and what remains to be determined in the current scientific literature.
This research examined the implicit attitudes of the preschool education professionals towards the gifted children. We used two types of assessment: how much an attitude is fair and how much it is ...good. The attitudes of preschool teachers who are working at the preschool institutions and the attitudes of students who are enrolled in vocational education for preschool teachers were compared. The control group were the students of sport training. The attitudes towards gifted children were researched as they are typically portrayed as intellectually superior, socially maladjusted and seen as a potential leaders of the society. The results showed a relatively positive attitude towards gifted children in all groups. The only exception is that they have a neutral to slightly negative attitude towards social adjustment of the gifted children. These results just partially confirmed the disharmony of the hypothesis that teachers frequently have. It is the assumption that the intellectual superiority of the gifted children is accompanied by social or emotional maladjustment. Based on the results, on the preschool level, there are not yet any kind of negative attitudes of the preschool teachers towards gifted children. In addition, it seems that the professionals increase the value of the cognitive aspect of giftedness with experience.
Objective. In this article we discuss the attitudes of teachers towards immigrant students in the classroom and investigate the students' experiences and that of their family; the other important ...factor in their education. Method. The methodology used was qualitative interviews, carried out in a comprehensive school catering for the different stages of compulsory education in Sicily (Italy). In-depth interviews were performed on 15 teachers who tutored immigrant students, with the aim of revealing their thoughts, emotions, perceptions and attitudes with regard to this social and educational experience. Results. Although there were disparate elements within the context of the school, the results were consistent with other studies that address this global, contemporary problem. We found a pronounced receptivity on the half of the staff, good responses between equals, but also a degree of impotence and institutional neglect in the face of the problem. It was consistently perceived that families of immigrant students were rarely involved in school life. The influence of socio-economic, ethnic and religious factors that often affect relations between the immigrant student's family and the school, also emerged. Conclusions. The phenomenon of immigrant children's school integration is plagued with difficulties, which are repeated and maintained in different areas and periods of time. Within the school, the teachers take on the main task of offering these children a favourable environment for integration. However, the other major aspect of our study, the family relationship, was less encouraging. The teachers felt a lack of cooperation from the families of immigrant children.

Language is a reflection of the dialogic or social phenomenon that sets humans apart from the animals. People interact and share information via cultural transmission from one ...person to the other. The purpose of this research was to determine the perceptions of English/language arts teachers concerning British English versus American English usage in students’ oral and written expression. Using an ethnographic survey research approach, findings indicated that there was a difference between English/language arts teachers’ nationality and their perceptions across the three clusters: (a)communicative competence regarding which dialect of English, (b) challenge of teaching Standard English to non)native EFL speakers, and (c) importance of constant correction of nonstandard English usage. In the sample of the study, differences were also detected between English/language arts teachers’ years of experience as an educator and their perceptions across the three clusters already cited. As well, there was a difference between English/language arts teachers’ academic training in nonstandard English dialects and their perceptions across the same three clusters. Pedagogical implications with regard to teaching which dialect students are required to speak or write in Standard English and whether professional development would help English/language arts teachers and students for teaching and learning Standard English.
Despite the widespread appeal of games among students, many teachers are reluctant to use them as teaching aids. The purpose of this preliminary investigation is to assess the attitudes of ...pre-service mathematics teachers towards the use of didactic games in classroom instruction and the extent to which they are considered competent in this regard. For this reason, 45 pre-service mathematics teachers answered a survey specially developed for this research. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, which calculated frequencies and percentages. According to the findings of this study, teachers have good attitudes toward the usage of games in their classrooms as well as their ability to use them. However, a tiny number of teachers had negative attitudes. This research will help establish professional development opportunities that are of higher and better quality by providing a thorough grasp of teachers' views.
The main purpose of this research is to examine whether the counselling course that the pre-school teaching students have taken in the Near East University, has affected the attitudes of students ...towards the masturbation behaviour of the 3-6 years old children or not. The sample of this descriptive analysis is the 160 students of the Pre-school Teaching Department of the Near East University. ‘The Attitude Scale Towards the Masturbation Behaviour of the 3-6 Years Old Children’ that has been developed by the researcher (2009) is used to determine the attitudes of students towards the masturbation behaviour of 3-6 years old children. The obtained data was analyzed by the 17 package program of SPSS with ANOVA and multiple comparison tests of LSD. According to the statistical analysis, significant results are achieved on the attitudes of the pre-school teaching students who took the counselling courses.
