To date, critical examinations of smart cities have largely ignored their temporality. In this article, I consider smart cities from a spatiotemporal perspective, arguing that they produce a new ...timescape and constitute space-time machines. The first half of the article examines spatiotemporal relations and rhythms, exploring how smart cities are the products of and contribute to space-time compression, create new urban polyrhythms, alter the practices of scheduling, and change the pace and tempos of everyday activities. The second half of the article details how smart cities shape the nature of temporal modalities, considering how they reframe and utilize the relationship among the past, present, and future. The analysis draws from a set of forty-three interviews conducted in Dublin, Ireland, and highlights that much of the power of smart urbanism is derived from how it produces a new timescape, rather than simply reconfiguring spatial relations.
Space and time are both crucial characteristic dimensions of geographic events and phenomena. Although exploratory spatial data analysis (ESDA) can be used to visualize and summarize complex spatial ...patterns, it has limitations in capturing the temporal dynamics of geographic features. Efforts have been made to incorporate the time dimension into ESDA techniques to detect space-time clustering or trends. Localized space-time statistics that could help in exploratory space-time data analysis (ESTDA), however, are still lacking. Focusing on spatial panel data, our work extended Getis-Ord
and
statistics using a space-time contemporaneous weight matrix and a space-time lagged weight matrix to account for local space-time autocorrelation. Two applications in this article show that the newly developed method can be used to summarize space-time patterns from spatial panel data, identify changes of landscape more consistently, and lend the results readily to visualization.
Resumen El artículo busca mostrar que en los debates sobre el tiempo histórico del siglo XX se evidencia un supuesto que se ha mantenido indiscutido entre los historiadores: el tiempo histórico es un ...tiempo específicamente “humano”, definido en contraposición a un tiempo “natural”. Sostengo que las discusiones que, al menos desde los últimos 20 años, vienen desarrollándose en torno al Antropoceno en las Ciencias del Sistema Tierra permiten cuestionar dicho supuesto, al poner de manifiesto la imbricación de los humanos en los procesos biogeoquímicos de la tierra. Este cuestionamiento habilita un replanteamiento novedoso del problema del tiempo histórico capaz de escapar al abordaje dicotómico observado en el siglo XX, a la vez que plantea nuevos desafíos al conocimiento histórico, ahora abierto hacia escalas temporales “más que humanas”.
Numerical weather prediction models play an increasingly important role in meteorology, both in short- and medium-range forecasting and global climate change studies. In this twenty-one act work of prose dialogues, no indications of time passing –other than those the characters happen to note– occur. However, a strong case can be made for implicit time, unmarked ...time that passes between the events of the work. In the Tragicomedia de Calisto y Melibea, these unseen bits of time can be reconstructed from non-sequential parts of the dialogue and made to describe the implicit time that lapses. A modern edition might include some stage directions which would add important information for new readers of the work. In fact, almost three weeks of lapsed time can be plotted, in addition to the month in which the authors extended the love affair of the title protagonists.

Cuando se aborda la vida en pareja desde los usos del tiempo, la mayor parte de los ejercicios sociológicos empíricos tienden a centrarse en el reparto o división de tareas domésticas. Un tipo de ...observación que tiende a: a) dejar a un lado el resto de actividades, salvo excepcionalmente el trabajo remunerado; b) centrarse en lo que hace cada uno de los miembros de la pareja y no en lo que hacen juntos. El presente trabajo es una observación de las parejas españolas desde la sociología del tiempo. Se pregunta: qué hacen juntas, en qué momentos están juntas y cuáles son las actividades que más contribuyen a estar juntas. Aun cuando no puede decirse plenamente que se trata de una observación sobre el tiempo compartido, en la medida que este concepto conlleva cierta inversión de subjetividad, es una aproximación al mismo. Para ello, ha utilizado como fuente los resultados de la Encuesta de Empleo del Tiempo 2009-2010, centrándose únicamente en la submuestra de informantes que viven en pareja.
