This article focuses first on the history of the Czech reception of the work of JeanArthur
Rimbaud and on the modifications of its interpretation, from the earliest mention
concerning Rimbaud to its ...present perception. Then, in this context, three Czech translations
of the poem The Drunken Boat are analyzed, dating from the post-World War II period: those
by František Hrubín (1956, 1961), Otto F. Babler (1981), and Gustav Francl (2008).
Le présent article se focalise dans un premier temps sur l´histoire de la réception
tchèque de l´œuvre de J.-A. Rimbaud et sur les modifications de son interprétation depuis
la première mention de Rimbaud jusqu´à sa perception contemporaine. Dans ce contexte
sont ensuite analysées trois versions tchèques du poème « Le bateau ivre », datant de la
période après la Seconde Guerre Mondiale : celle de F. Hrubín (1956, 1961), d´O. F. Babler
(1981) et de G. Francl (2008).
José de Viera y Clavijo (Los Realejos, Tenerife, 1731–Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 1813) is the author of the first translation into Spanish, made in 1784, of a selection of the tales and dramas ...written for children published by Arnaud Berquin (Bordeaux, 1747-París, 1791) in L’ami des enfants, a mensile publication that has got twelfe numbers between 1782 and 1783, and that were, almost the whole collection, translations of German, Dutch and English authors, extracted from publications as Kleine Kinderbibliothek (1779-1784), by Campe, or Der Kinderfreund (1776-1782), by Christian Felix Weisse, between others. The translations/adaptations made by Arnaud Berquin were very free, and they show an evident accommodation to the French culture and to the enlightenment philosophy of this author. Nowadays, the enlightenment age author Viera y Clavijo, an advanced author and a expert and prolific translator, took many liberties in translating the Berquin’s Tales. In this article, are shown some of the important changes introduced by the the Spanish translator in his versions and they are explained in the cultural and ideological context of the Spain in the 18th century.
Orality is, doubtlessly, one of the most important aspects in the novel Grande Sertão: Veredas, and, in general, in João Guimarães Rosa’s work. Despite the abundance of studies on this author and his ...work, orality remains a fertile ground for research, especially if approached from the aspect of translation bias. This is why we propose to analyze, in this work, the way in which French translators have tackled this topic in their translations. To do so, we will resort to the theories developed by Henri Meschonnic (1982; 1999) regarding oral and spoken forms, the study on oral speech in Grande Sertão: Veredas carried out by Souto Ward (1984), and the works organized by Michel Ballard in the compilation Oralité et Traduction (2001).
This paper explores ways in which frameworks of intercultural engagement used in Caribbean Literary Translation Studies and in Critical Global Citizenship Education contest those implied by the managerialist discourse of internationalization currently predominant in Anglophone Caribbean and other higher education systems. The work of Édouard Glissant, particularly, is used to exemplify the potential of Caribbean thought for supplying rich forms of inter-relation that acknowledge the inherently problematic character of intercultural interactions. Literary translation flows between the Anglophone Caribbean and Cuba are invoked as a possible site of pedagogical and research development around the ideas discussed.
This selection of papers from the ITI's landmark First International Colloquium on Literary Translation includes provocative perspectives on the teaching, research and status of literary education in ...universities. By way of introduction Peter Bush looks at strategies for raising the profile of the theory and practice of literary translation, its professionalisation and role in the development of national and international cultures. Nicholas Round and Edwin Gentzler explore undergraduate teaching of translation in the UK and the US while Douglas Robinson gives a Woody Allenish frame to an experience of pedagogy. Susan Bassnett sets out an overview of the development of research in Translation Studies that is complemented by case studies of translations of Shakespeare's Letter-Puns by Dirk Delabastita and of Molly Bloom's Soliloquy by Maria Angeles Code Parrilla. Kirsten Malmkjær and Masako Taira respectively review translating Hans Christian Andersen and the Japanese particle ne as examples of the relationship between linguistics and literary translation. Ian Craig examines the impact of censorship on the translation of children's fiction in Francoist Spain. Developing the international perspective, Else Vieira considers paradigms for translation in Latin America from concretist poetics to post-modernism.
This article focuses on translations by Augusto de Campos in which he integrates select Spanish-American poets into his Brazilian poetics and highlights the most linguistically experimental aspects ...of that canon. Campos applies techniques of fragmentation and negation in his intraduções as he calls his creative translations. I analyze selections he translated from Spanish-American modernista and vanguardista poets to demonstrate that these works bridge a gap between diverging poetic traditions of Latin America and invite readers to imagine a different historical trajectory for pan-Latin American experimental poetry. The alternative tradition these translations construct is more inclusive of Brazilian poetics and circumvents the surrealist moment to instead pass through early avant-garde language experimentation directly to concrete poetry.
