Documenting Maritime Heritage at Risk addresses the risks posed to coastal piers and quays due to climate change, the urgent need for documentation and attendant questions regarding long-term ...conservation, and the role communities could have in this endeavour. Case studies from communities, researchers, and national agencies offer insights into the documentation and analysis of coastal heritage, guidance on survey methodologies, and the potential of digital tools. Communities living along the coast, who are deeply attached to their heritage, are facing these threats very directly – and often with a sense of having little agency in the discussions or decisions being taken. Yet, as the book demonstrates, they could have a central role to play as first-hand observers of the impact of climate change on their heritage. This study analyses the extent to which there is an overlap in the territorial distribution and attractiveness of tourism images distributed via three different media: official tourist brochures, travel guides and user-generated content (Instagram). We applied a mixed-method approach, which included spatial analyses and cartography, to study the promotion of tourism in Montevideo (Uruguay). The results indicated a partial overlap between the locations captured in user-generated images and those promoted by official tourist brochures and travel guides. The findings suggest a territorial distribution of tourism images that is clearly differentiated according to the source(s). This provides useful insights for applications of social media into future geographical and image management research.

Various studies have analysed the image of tourist destinations on social networks. However, most of them have tended to focus on urban spaces. The current article analyses the presence of tourist ...images on a wider scale: for the whole of Senegal. Photographs taken by Instagram users are compared with the information presented in travel guides. The results show that although travel guides include a much greater number of attractions than Instagram, it is Instagram that provides much wider spatial coverage. This shows the need for comparative studies between different sources of tourist information and, at the same time, points to the need for approaches that consider the local and regional scales in their analyses.

Translating cultural references in tourism materials is pivotal in bridging cultural gaps and facilitating cross-cultural communication. Despite the escalating demand for accurate translation, no ...research exists to address the losses in cultural connotations and their impact on semantic accuracy in Chinese-English cultural reference translation within Lonely Planet’s travel guides. This research seeks to fill this gap, specifically focusing on Beijing, Shanghai, and Sichuan destinations. The objectives are as follows: 1) to identify the types of cultural connotation losses in the English translation of Chinese cultural references; 2) to examine cultural-related semantic losses, considering instances where cultural connotation losses lead to partial or complete semantic losses; and 3) to elucidate the translation decisions (both macro and micro levels) implications on the culturally based semantic losses. A qualitative-descriptive approach forms the foundation of this research. The findings revealed seven types of cultural connotation losses, with partial semantic losses predominant. Applying Venuti’s domestication and foreignization, the results also uncovered a strong inclination toward foreignization, emphasizing the strangeness inherent in the source culture is intensified. These findings contribute to a nuanced understanding of the complexities of translating cultural connotations and maintaining semantic accuracy, offering a comprehensive typology that can guide future translation practices and serve as a springboard for further research in the field. Lastly, this study underscores the significance of maintaining cultural connotations in translation, thereby contributing to the ongoing development of cross-cultural communication.
This article presents the results of empirical research on the labour market of city travel guides, regional guides and mountain guides as well as tour leaders. The aim of this article is to evaluate ...the demand for the services of travel guides and tour leaders. The study included tourism entrepreneurs and the method of a diagnostic survey with the use of computer-assisted telephone interviewing (CATI) was applied. The obtained results confirmed the thesis that the labour market of travel guides and tour leaders is not stable and this is due to the seasonality, level of earnings and changing model of travel organization. The study also showed that in the five-year period from the deregulation of the professions, the market relations between travel guides and tour leaders on the one hand and tourism entrepreneurs on the other did not undergo fundamental changes. The results of the study may be useful for tour operators, organisations associating travel guides and tour leaders as well as for tourism administration at the central and regional level.

Christof ...Mauch is a leading German historian who has spent many years in the US and in this book he attempts, from a European perspective, to grasp the diversity of American culture and the transformation of its environments, combining travel reporting with nature writing, personal observation and philosophical reflection. Mauch seeks the familiar in unfamiliar places and the curious in places that seem common and well-known. The journey begins in tiny Wiseman, Alaska and the final portrait is of Portland, Oregon, famously America’s most sustainable city. In between, Mauch’s wanderings in space and time, his serendipitous and planned encounters with places and people, bring to light the tension and ambivalence in most Americans’ attitudes towards their often-perilous environment, the intertwining throughout history of valuation, conservation and destruction. Interactions between human beings and the environment have settled like sediment down the centuries and may be read in the present – in the form of landscapes and collective memory, in bodies of water and the earth’s strata, tree rings and human cells. This article is concerned with the question of how American women, particularly those who identified as lesbian, questioning, or queer found information about where to locate other lesbian, ...questioning, or queer women in a pre-internet era. The women's travel guide, Gaia's Guide, communicated information about "safe" and women friendly spaces during the early to mid years of American women's and lesbian and gay liberation movements (1975-1992). The creation of lesbian feminist communities was bolstered by the production of these guides and other women's guidebooks; however, the guides promoted a lesbian feminist community that centered whiteness and middle-class identity. Sandy Horn's role as editor of Gaia's Guide influenced the representations of what was "safe," desirable, and enticing to readers. The guides also reflected prevailing structural inequalities during the period. This article shows that the technology of the travel guides shaped lesbian feminist communities through intentional and unintentional exclusion.
