This volume collects the proceedings of the meeting held in September 2021 at the Archaeological Museum of Stabia Libero D'Orsi, organized by the Scuola Superiore Meridionale di Napoli and the ...Archaeological Park of Pompeii. The focus on the ancient city of Stabiae combines the evidence found on the tufa ridge of Varano with what is preserved in the modern city of Castellammare, the ancient city's port that survived the Plinian eruption. Two different Institutions protect the area: the Archaeological Park of Pompeii is in charge of the ancient villas and the Museum at the Quisisana Royal Palace, while the Superintendence for the Metropolitan Area of Naples takes care of the archaeological evidence of the territory. The seminar sought to unite these two perspectives and it was focused on creating a common space for researchers working in the area, in order to share data and hypotheses and discuss the field activities and the project of a new archaeological park, that must find in the Archaeological Museum of Stabia a narrative hub.
Research in historical periods has always had a strong tradition in Finnish archaeology. Past studies and archaeological fieldwork have mostly focused on medieval times; however, in the past 20 ...years, investigationsof early modern towns (1520–1721 AD) have taken place more often in Finland and have changed the tide.Most archaeological excavations in Finland are currently carried out owing to infrastructure and constructionprojects and can therefore be regarded as contract archaeology. First, this article aims to examine and providean overview of past research in Finnish urban archaeology focused on early modern towns. Second, currentresearch trends are discussed with an emphasis on the possibilities offered by multidisciplinary approaches.Recent research conducted in Turku serves as a case study to illustrate these developments. The article concludes by touching upon the persistent challenges faced by research, primarily stemming from the contractual nature of most archaeological investigations.
This volume is the fruit of a highly productive international research gathering academic and professional (field- and museum) colleagues to discuss new results and approaches, recent finds and ...alternative theoretical assessments of the period of transition and transformation of classical towns in Late Antiquity. Experts from an array of modern countries attended and presented to help compare and contrast critically archaeologies of diverse regions and to debate the qualities of the archaeology and the current modes of study. While a number of papers inevitably focused on evidence available for both Spain and Portugal, we were delighted to have a spread of contributions that extended the picture to other territories in the Late Roman West and Mediterranean. The emphasis was very much on the images presented by archaeology (rescue and research works, recent and past), but textual data were also brought into play by various contributors.
The Shanghai region is home to millennia of archaeological cultures and a massive modern metropolois. Until recently, this regional history has remained within the overarching framework of a ...north-China centric archaeology. Throughout the emergence of archaeological cultures in Shanghai and its periphery, however, we can observe striking adaptations to the vulnerability of its landscape, as well as ingenious technical and engineering solutions. This paper uses archaeological data to explore how this fragile environment was treated in the past and how people adapted to it, offering insights into the long-term human-environment interactions with the Lower Yangtze area.

This article presents research results from the archaeological excavation in the territory of Dominikonų St. 11 in Vilnius Old Town. In order to present as thorough dietary reconstructions of people ...who lived here as possible, four groups of evidence were combined together: archaeological artifacts, historical datasets, zooarchaeological research and archaeobotanical investigation. The analyzed materials are covering a wide chronological range (between 15th and 18th century) allowing us to observe the dietary changes in relation to architectural development, spatial distribution. This research shows changes in human diet across time from pre-Palace human diet consisting of grain and cattle meat to imported oysters, veal, game, and wines during the Palace period.

She traces the emergence of urban features during the Predynastic ...Period up to the disintegration of the powerful Middle Kingdom state (c.3500–1650 BC). This book offers a synthesis of the archaeological data that sheds light on the different facets of urbanism in ancient Egypt. Drawing on evidence from recent excavations as well as a vast body of archaeological data, this book explores the changing settlement patterns by contrasting periods of strong political control against those of decentralization. It also discusses households and the layout of domestic architecture, which are key elements for understanding how society functioned and evolved over time. Moeller reveals what settlement patterns can tell us about the formation of complex society and the role of the state in urban development in ancient Egypt.

The results have allowed for the reconstruction of various aspects of daily life in these cities since their foundation, but they have also uncovered data on previous occupations of those same spaces during the pre-Hispanic period. There is still a need to consolidate adequate work strategies adjusted to the needs and particularities of these contexts, which increasingly require the execution of this type of archaeology project.
