To examine the association between physical activity, screen time, eating habits and daytime sleepiness among Brazilian adolescents.
Adolescents from three high schools (n = 876, 49.8% female, ...16.4 ± 1.2 years) participated in this cross-sectional survey. Variables related to lifestyle behaviors (ie, physical activity, screen time, eating habits, sleep duration) were collected through an online questionnaire. Daytime sleepiness was assessed using the Pediatric Daytime Sleepiness Scale (PDSS). Excessive daytime sleepiness was defined as a PDSS score ≥20.
The average PDSS score was 18.9 (SD ± 4.8) points and 46.8% of adolescents were classified as having excessive daytime sleepiness. Physical activity was inversely associated with PDSS score (β = −0.29, 95% CI -0.47; −0.11). Consuming processed foods frequently (β = 1.16, 95% CI 0.85; 1.47) and using social media (β = 0.22, 95% CI 0.14; 0.30) were positively associated with PDSS score. Similar findings were observed for the odds of excessive daytime sleepiness. Physical activity was inversely associated (OR = 0.91, 95% CI 0.84; 0.99), while frequent consumption of processed foods (OR = 1.55, 95% CI 1.33; 1.82) and using social media (OR = 1.13, 95% CI 1.02; 1.24) were positively associated with excessive daytime sleepiness.
Lower physical activity level, a higher consumption processed foods, and higher social media use were associated with daytime sleepiness in this sample of Brazilian adolescents.
•46.8% of adolescents experienced excessive daytime sleepiness.•Physical activity may protect from excessive daytime sleepiness.•Consumption of processed foods is related to daytime sleepiness.•Daytime sleepiness is increased for each 1 h more spent in front of a screen using social media.
China's Small-town Youth is an important social class connecting urban and rural development. Its ideological status is closely related to social stability and development so that the study of ...political identity of small town youth in China has become an important topic.
Based on survey and in-depth interviews, this paper investigates the intermediate mechanism of short videos use on political identity of China's Small-town Youth.
The study found that the use of short videos by China's Small-town Youth has a significant positive impact on political identity, and media trust and political trust play a complete mediating role between the use of short videos and political identity. Cultural identity as the main content of China's political ideology propaganda, cannot affect political trust. This research provides theoretical basis and practical enlightenment for the systematic understanding of the spiritual world and political beliefs of China's Small-town Youth, and for exploring how to enhance their political identity through short videos use.
Introduction. Technologies and digital communication play a crucial role in everyday life. With the increasing number of people spending a significant amount of time online, the study of subjective ...factors influencing online behavior strategies becomes highly relevant. The novelty of this research lies in identifying online behavior strategies among young individuals and examining the factor structures of young people with different online behavior strategies. This article presents the results of studying the personality traits of students with various online behavior strategies. Methods. Various methods were employed, including theoretical analysis and summarization of research findings on this issue; psychodiagnostic research methods; mathematical and statistical analysis (descriptive statistics, Mann-Whitney U-test, cluster analysis, factor analysis). In the study, 177 students aged 17 to 21 participated. Two groups were distinguished in order to differentiate students based on their online behavior strategies: students with an entertainment-oriented Internet behavior (n = 124) and students with a productive-oriented Internet behavior (n = 53). Results. The following results were obtained: among contemporary youth who are active in the online environment, two strategies of online behavior are identified - entertainment-oriented online behavior strategy and productive-oriented strategy. The choice of behavior strategy is related to the respondents' personality traits. Significant differences were found between the groups of students with different online behavior strategies in terms of adaptability, self-acceptance, and autonomy. Discussion. The authors examine the personality traits of youth with different online behavior strategies. In conclusion, it is concluded that the factor structures of students with different online behavior strategies differ.
•A study of 34 professional carers and adolescent boys in residential care.•Carer attachment and reflective functioning (RF) linked to youth behavior problems.•Carer RF: a moderator between carer ...anxious attachment and youth behavior problems.
While previous research has underscored the importance of the professional carer-adolescent relationship in residential care as a means for promoting youth adaptation, very little is known on the processes at work. Namely, can professional carers’ interest and curiosity in adolescents’ mental states mitigate the negative associations between professional carers’ insecure attachment and adolescents’ behavioral and emotional adaptation? This is an important question to examine given that insecure attachment among carers may constitute an important obstacle to developing positive relationships with adolescents in their care. Thirty-four dyads consisting of professional carers and adolescent boys living in juvenile residential care units took part in the current study. Carers completed the Attachment Style Questionnaire (ASQ) as well as an adapted version of the Parental Reflective Functioning Questionnaire (PRFQ). Adolescents completed the Youth Self-Report (YSR) and Psychological Availability and Reliance on Adult (PARA) questionnaires as indicators of their socio-emotional adaptation. Results of hierarchical multiple regression analysis revealed that lower carer anxious attachment and greater carer reflective functioning (interest and curiosity in mental states) were associated with fewer youth internalizing problems. Furthermore, carers’ reflective functioning was found to moderate the association between carers’ anxious attachment and both youth internalizing and externalizing problems. Specifically, for carers low in reflective functioning, as their levels of anxious attachment increased, so did adolescents’ internalizing behavior problems. For carers high in reflective functioning, anxious attachment was not related to youth internalizing problems. A similar moderation effect was found for youth externalizing problems. For carers low in reflective functioning, as their levels of anxious attachment increased, so did adolescents’ externalizing behavior problems. For carers high in reflective functioning, anxious attachment was not related to youth externalizing problems. The role of carers’ reflective functioning, abilities that can be developed and enhanced despite one’s insecure attachment, within the context of residential care is discussed.

If you have an interest in supporting vulnerable children or young people, this book provides a wealth of inspiration and ideas you can use, whatever the setting.
Research that simultaneously examines the relationship of multiple types of family and community violence with adolescent outcomes is limited in the previous research literature, particularly in ...Latin America. This study examines the relationship of adolescent exposure to family and community violence—parental use of corporal punishment, violence in the community, intimate partner physical aggression—with eight subscales of the Youth Self Report among a Chilean sample of 593 adolescent-mother pairs. Results from multilevel models indicated a positive association between adolescent exposure to violence in the family and community, and a wide range of behavior problem outcomes, in particular, aggression. With growing evidence concerning the detrimental effect of violence on adolescent well-being, these findings emphasize the need for a more comprehensive understanding of the various kinds of violence adolescents are exposed to within the family and community and the concomitant need to reduce multiple forms of violence.
Although a growing body of research on student safety focuses on school disorder, school climate, and the intersection of community/situational factors, comparatively less research has focused ...specifically on the individual- and school-level factors that put students at risk of victimization in the immediate school environ. The present study is an attempt to broaden our understanding of the contribution of schools and school behavior to the victimization experiences of students. We compare traditional routine activity constructs to understand whether and how they differentially influence the risk of community and school victimization. Additionally, we investigate what school-related variables (behavioral and structural) explain variation in young people's risk for school victimization.
Domestic and world experience in managing the economy and the social sphere confirms the applicability of targeted programs to the solution of the problems of the development of education and the ...improvement of educational work with youth. The experience of developing and implementing federal targeted and state programs for the development of education in the Russian Federation in terms of their performance of the functions of educating children, adolescents, and young people has been article analyzed. The need for a more complete reflection of educational principles in educational programs is shown, for which purpose it is necessary to single out the category of targeted programs for managing the education of decent behavior of young people.
