The latest ISO 9000:2000 family of standards was expected to advance quality management further than the previous (1994) version of the series and to form a new basis for continual improvement and ...business excellence. However, although the expectations of the revised standard were very high, there is not enough evidence yet to support its actual success. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of quality management in accordance with the global ISO 9000:2000 standards. More specifically, the paper investigates whether certified organisations have really witnessed the expected benefits of the revised series of standards, as well as the overall benefits and problems encountered in the implementation of the process-oriented ISO 9001:2000 standard. The study is based on Greek SMEs which were initially certified to the previous ISO 9000:1994 standards and adapted their systems to the revised ISO 9001:2000 standard. Major conclusions indicate continuous improvement and customer orientation as the main improvement areas. Higher management involvement in quality efforts and continuous process improvement are the most obvious and valued benefits from certification, while managers did not witness any special difficulties in the standard's implementation process.

Audit conclusions, which imply consultancy work, are a common practice among auditors. Furthermore, there exist great differences regarding the required conditions for certification. The differences primarily depend on the auditors, but also on the certification bodies. Finally, the study also indicates that the audit procedure has improved after the ISO 9000 revision in 2000.
ISO 9001 is a standard for quality management systems and CMMI is a model for process improvement. If an ISO-certified organization wishes to improve its processes continuously, implementing CMMI ...would be a good choice, as it provides more detailed practices for process improvement than the ISO standards. However, there are two issues that need to be resolved when an ISO-certified organization implements CMMI. First, it is not easy to identify any reusable parts of the ISO standards, and it would be advantageous to be able to reuse selected portions of the ISO standards during CMMI adoption in order to use existing resources to their best advantage. Second, it is difficult for an ISO-certified organization to implement CMMI in a straightforward, easy manner because of the differences in the language, structure, and details of the two sets of documents. In this paper, we present our unified model for ISO 9001:2000 and CMMI that resolves these two issues. Our model would be an extremely useful tool for ISO-certified organizations that plan to implement CMMI.

Purpose

Design/methodology/approach
– The principles of KM were integrated with the five major clauses of ISO 9001:2000 standard. After designing this integrated system, it was subjected to peripheral implementation study in a government-managed company situated in India. The knowledge portal required for maintaining this integrated system was also developed.
Findings
– ISO 9001:2008 and ISO 9001:2000 standards rest on the same process-based quality system model which is comprised of five major clauses. Hence, the integrated system proposed in this paper can be utilized by the contemporary organizations to infuse KM principles in ISO 9001:2008 based quality system.
Research limitations/implications
– Though the integrated system designed in this research could not be implemented in a full-fledged manner, the experiences gained have been useful to indicate the future direction of research and practice for integrating KM principles with ISO 9001:2008 Supported Quality System.
Practical implications
– A roadmap has been evolved to guide the practitioners to implement Knowledge Managed ISO 9001:2008 Supported Quality System.
Originality value
– No researcher or practitioner has so far contributed a model integrating the process-based quality system incorporated in ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 9001:2008 standards with KM principles. As this gap is filled in this paper, the contributions of this paper are valuable to both researchers and practitioners.
