Anti-reflective (AR) coatings minimize photon losses of optics when it comes to the transmission of light, thus, are broadly used for imaging and laser applications. However, the maximum output power ...in high-power lasers is limited by the so-called laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) parameter of optical elements. Often AR coated nonlinear crystals are responsible for such limitations, however, LIDT data is rather scarce. Thus, only limited understanding about LIDT pulse temporal scaling laws for AR coatings exists, which also lacks the specificity about fatigue effect of distinct failure modes. To expand the present knowledge four identical lithium triborate (LBO) crystals were prepared. Each crystal had one side coated with the AR@1064+532 nm coating and the opposite side coated with the AR@355 nm coating. Multiple LIDT tests were then conducted following 1-on-1 and S-on-1 testing protocols at UV and IR wavelengths while varying laser pulse duration. Empirical scaling laws are then investigated for different failure modes and later interpreted using a numerical model.
Recent advances in ion beam sputtering technology enabled efficient deposition of different oxide mixture coatings. In the present investigation, coating materials ZrO2and SiO2 were utilized for the ...synthesis of different mixtures. The goal of the conducted investigation was to explore the potential of ZrO2/SiO2 mixtures, especially for applications in the range of the UV spectral. Deposited dielectric mirrors having classical quarter-wave and “rised” design with ZrO2/SiO2 mixture for 266 nm and 355 nm showed good resistance to laser radiation.
We also investigated the “fatigue” behavior of LIDT’s in LBO crystals with single, dual and triple wavelength anti-reflective coatings (AR@355, AR@532+1064 and AR@355+532+1064) in order to optimize design and layer materials. The influence of gradient refractive index profiles on damage resistance is of a special interest. We selected a few designs of antireflective coatings which demonstrated the best resistance to laser radiation.
An experimental study on rugate filter coatings showed the need for a more accurate characterization of optical properties of metal oxides and their corresponding mixtures.

Šiame darbe tiriamas jonapluoščio dulkinimo technologija dengtų ZrO2/SiO2 ir jų mišinių optinių savybių pritaikymas kintamo lūžio rodiklio (Rugate tipo) optinėms interferencinėms dangoms formuoti. Mišiniuose naudojant mažą ZrO2 frakciją, buvo išplėstas šios medžiagos pritaikymas UV srityje. Remiantis gautais rezultatais, suformuotos didelio atspindžio (HR) ir skaidrinančios (AR) dangos esant λ = 355 nm bangos ilgio spinduliuotei, taip pat teoriškai sumodeliuotos ir suformuotos daugiabangio skaidrinimo (AR@ 355+532+ 064) Rugate tipo dangos ant LBO (LiB3O5) netiesinių kristalų. Palygintos šių dangų optinės savybės su tomis dangomis, kuriose panaudoti gryni metalo oksidai (fiksuoto lūžio rodiklio). Atliktas Rugate tipo dangų, pasižyminčių siaura didelio (R > 99,9 %) atspindžio zona ties 532 nm ir pralaidumu likusioje spektro dalyje, teorinis modeliavimas ir eksperimentinis garinimas.

The spatio-temporal evolution of sunspot activity, the so-called Maunder butterfly diagram, has been continously available since 1874 using data from the Royal Greenwich Observatory, extended by SOON ...network data after 1976. Here we present a new extended butterfly diagram of sunspot group occurrence since 1826, using the recently digitized data from Schwabe (1826–1867) and Spörer (1866–1880). The wings of the diagram are separated using a recently developed method based on an analysis of long gaps in sunspot group occurrence in different latitude bands. We define characteristic latitudes, corresponding to the start, end, and the largest extent of the wings (the F, L, and H latitudes). The H latitudes (30°–45°) are highly significantly correlated with the strength of the wings (quantified by the total sum of the monthly numbers of sunspot groups). The F latitudes (20°–30°) depict a weak tendency, especially in the southern hemisphere, to follow the wing strength. The L latitudes (2°–10°) show no clear relation to the wing strength. Overall, stronger cycle wings tend to start at higher latitudes and have a greater wing extent. A strong (5–6)-cycle periodic oscillation is found in the start and end times of the wings and in the overlap and gaps between successive wings of one hemisphere. While the average wing overlap is zero in the southern hemisphere, it is two to three months in the north. A marginally significant oscillation of about ten solar cycles is found in the asymmetry of the L latitudes. The new long database of butterfly wings provides new observational constraints to solar dynamo models that discuss the spatio-temporal distribution of sunspot occurrence over the solar cycle and longer.

The main aim of this dissertation was to identify physical causes that limit optical component‘s spectral properties and resistance to laser radiation as well as to optimize the final substrate preparation procedure and coating deposition technology.
In this work we report an experimental investigation of subsurface damage (SSD) in conventionally polished fused silica (FS) substrates, which are widely used in laser applications and directly influence performances of optical elements. Subsurface damages are defined as residual digs and scratches, some of which are filled with polishing slurry and covered with so-called Bielby layer (polished layer). Acid etching procedure of FS substrates was developed, which allows removing polished layer and eliminating SSD. Different durations of acid etching have been used to study laser induces damage threshold (LIDT) of FS substrates. These experiments revealed that the optimal etching time is ~1 min for a given acid concentration. LIDT of etched FS samples increased ~4 times.
The LIDT in LiB3O5 (LBO) crystals coated with different types of (single AR@355 nm and triple AR@355+532+1064 nm wavelength) anti-reflective coatings was also investigated. All these coatings were produced of different oxide materials (ZrO2, Al2O3, and SiO2) and ZrO2-SiO2 mixtures by using the ion beam sputtering (IBS) deposition technique.
Also, we present explorations of reactive magnetron sputtering technology for deposition of ZrO2 and Nb2O5/SiO2 mixture thin... to full text
