This study investigates the impact of Process-oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL) on students' academic performance, collaboration, and problem-solving capacities. This study adopted a two-group ...experimental design comprising an experimental group that received POGIL pedagogy and a control group that received traditional pedagogy. The 98 seventh-graders from a junior high school in central Taiwan comprised 51 experimental and 47 control group students. The data were collected over one semester using tests to assess academic achievement and scales to measure collaboration and problem-solving. This study used descriptive statistics: distribution frequencies, percentages, mean values, standard deviations, and inferential statistics: ANCOVA to analyze data. The results revealed that the experimental group acquired significantly higher scores on the collaboration and problem-solving scales and academic tests than the control group, indicating that POGIL pedagogy is more effective than traditional pedagogy at improving students' academic achievement and capacities for collaboration and problem-solving. The study confirmed that POGIL pedagogy positively affected student academic achievement, collaboration, and problem-solving capacities.
Although natural disasters can threaten health and well-being, some people show greater resilience to their effects than others. Identifying the characteristics related to resilience has important ...implications for reducing the health risks in the aftermath of a disaster.
Using the Conservation of Resources Theory as a framework, we study the role of resources in moderating the adverse effects of natural disasters on people's health and coping behaviors.
We match 20,658 unique individuals aged 50 or older from the 2012–2016 waves of the Health and Retirement Study to the county-level annual natural hazard data provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Using individual-fixed effect models, we first model whether the experience of natural disasters can predict people's health and coping behaviors. We then explore heterogeneity in such effects by interacting individual- and county-level resilience resources with the number of natural disasters.
The results show that with increased exposure to natural disasters, older adults are more likely to experience difficulties performing instrumental daily activities. They also tend to have fewer overnight hospital stays, higher out-of-pocket medical expenses, and increased alcohol dependency. However, older adults with certain socio-economic characteristics ‒ white, higher education, higher income, and homeownership ‒ are better able than others to mitigate any adverse health effects of natural disasters. One significant community-level resource is a robust healthcare capacity in a county with a high ratio of healthcare practitioners, where older adults are more likely to seek hospital care and have lower alcohol dependency.
Health resilience can be improved by strengthening community-level healthcare capacity, with a particular focus on residents with lower socio-economic resources. Failing to address healthcare provision inequalities may exacerbate health disparities.
•We use the Conservation of Resource theory as a framework.•Natural hazards decrease people's physical health and hospital visits.•Natural hazards increase out-of-pocket medical expenses and alcohol dependency.•Individual-level resource moderates the adverse effects of natural hazards.•Healthcare capacity in the community mitigates the adverse effects.
Chinese and English are of variant language systems, which account for some differences in their temporal concepts. In terms of the temporal concepts EARLIER and LATER between Chinese and English, ...Vyvyan Evans and MelanieGreen came to a conclusion that English tend to view time on a horizontal axis while Chinese on a vertical axis. Thepresent research intends to obtain a more general and objective view of temporal difference across Chinese andEnglish, by referring to definitions and examples in Chinese and English dictionaries and doing a survey amongsenior English majors in Wenzhou University.

This project aims to improve students’ listening ability by an online English listening course to learning independently after class. The English songs learning course was made by WIX based on the ...ADDIE model. When mainland children start to listen English, they may feel intimidated, nervous, and scared, which can hinder students’ further learning. If English songs are used to teach, students can learn while having fun. However, there is a lack of systematic teaching method of how to use songs. Simple utilization in the classroom makes it difficult to achieve the expected results. Data collections by giving online questionnaire in this project were six students of Grade 3rd in Mainland China. This study reveals the students’ evaluation of this online listening course, as well as the problems they encountered and suggestions for improvement of the course and website.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of the Chinese Writing Program of Self-Regulated Development Strategy (SRSDWP) on student learning. With that aim, two-groups were tested in an ...experimental design with comparison of scores of writing self-efficacy, writing self-regulated strategy, and writing motivation. Results between the experimental group and control group were examined to assess the impact of SRSDWRP on students’ learning. The SRSDCWP is based on the teaching model of self-regulated strategy development (SRSD) that consists of six instructional steps of developing background knowledge, discussing, modeling, memorizing, supporting, and independent performance. Participants consisted of 105 eighth graders from one junior high school located in central Taiwan divided into 50 students in the experimental group who attended the SRSDCWP, and 55 students in the control group who were not submitted to the intervention program. Three units of teaching materials were designed and implemented for 12 weeks. Two groups with a similar background and life/ schooling experience were taught by the same Chinese literature teacher and received writing instruction for 45 minutes in a total of 135 min per week. Data were collected through students’ writing self-efficacy scale, self-regulated strategy scale, and motivation scale. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics of distribution frequencies, percentages, mean values, standard deviations and inferential statistic using ANCOVA. The results revealed that the scores of the experimental group regarding students’ writing self-efficacy scale, self-regulated strategy scale, and motivation scale were significantly higher than those of the control group. The study concluded that the SRSDCWP provided positive influence on students’ writing self-efficacy, self-regulated strategies, and motivation.
