  • Naravni gradbeni in okrasni kamni kartuzije Pleterje
    Ramovš, Anton
The original Pleterje Carthusian monastery (1407-1420) and the still preservedand now restored very beautiful Gothic church (Fig. 1-3) rest on solid rock of Upper Cretaceous limestone and limestone ... breccia. They werw constructed mostly of Miocene shelly limestone, lithothamnian limestone, marlylimestone and calcareos sandstone. This building materials werw quarried only a few hundred meters from the monastery walls where the same rocks with the same fossils as in the church walls are exposed (Fig. 4,5). In the second phase, after 1899, a new larger monastery was built. Its entire pedestal consists of ashlars of micritic Upper Cretaceous limestone and limestone breccia. Of these two rocks there are built also the staircase to the principal church (Fig. 6) and the stone stairs in front of the altar (Fig. 7,8). Of breccia consist also the mighty church portal (Fig. 6), some other objects (Fig. 9,10) and the new altar in the gothic church (Fig. 11,12), as well as the stone cross with socle on the graveyard (Fig. 10). The limestone and breccia which werw quarried just behind the walls give a stamp to the new Carthusian monastery.
