    In the last 20-30 years, the prevalence of atopic diseases has increased considerably in developed countries. Both specific and nonspecific environmental factors play a major role in the development ... of allergic diseases. There is convincing evidence of an association between early exposure to allergens and sensitisation and the developement of allergic disease. During early postnatal life contact with infectious agents plays an obligatory role in stimulating the functional maturation of Th 1 cells.
