  • Novejši pogledi na biologijo staranja = New sight on biology of aging
    Starc, Vito
Background. It is well known that aging is connected with the reduction of many physiological functions. However, there has been growing evidence that caloric restriction or increased physical ... activity may attenuate this reduction, resulting in the retardation of the aging process. Conclusions. In the paper, we searched the literature and analyzed phenomena that are currently taught to cause aging including oxygen stressgiving rise to reactiveoxygen species as well asglycosylation of proteins in thepresence of glucose and oxygen giving rise to A GEproducts. Particular attention is paid for molecular and cellular explanation of macroscopic manifestations of aging, and of some common diseases, like heart failure, diabetes mellitus and atherosclerosis. Finally, we tried to identify those molecular mechanisms connected with caloric restriction or increased physical activity, which influence physiological variables to change in the same sense as to oppose aging.
