  • ¿La palanca del prólogo o deus ex machina? : el coepíscopo del Gran Cairo y el catedrático de Óxford en Fray Gerundio = Prefatory lever or deus ex machina? : the fellow bishop of the Great Cairo and the Oxford professor in Fray Gerundio
    Fock, Ignac
The present article is a narratological study of the novel Fray Gerundio by José Francisco de Isla. Starting from its extensive “Prólogo con morrión” [Preface with a helmet], it focuses on two ... curious fictional figures introduced by the author: the fellow bishop of the Great Cairo and the Oxford professor. It aims to demonstrate that the correlate as well as the narrative, rhetorical, and ficional “lever” of the abundant prefatory apparatus is, in fact, situated outside the latter, at the end of the novel. Such situation can be attributed to the narrative functions assumed by these two characters, since it is through them that Isla resorts to the topos of the found manuscript, a manoeuvre which classically would have appeared in the preface and not in the final chapter.
