  • The hybrid manufacuring cell [Elektronski vir] : an integrated solution for additive manufacturing with CNC machining
    Boivie, Klas ...
The application of additive manufacturing (AM) for production of injection molding tools and inserts has enabled the production of industrial grade tooling with conformal cooling channels which ... brings significant improvements in regards to, for example, process cycle times and the quality of the final product. However, the production of tool inserts by AM is most often far from being rapid and the cost is usually considerably higher than for conventionally produced inserts. A combination of AM with CNC milling in a hybrid process route allows for the application of each process to the production of the part of the product geometry for which it is most advantageous. However, the combination of fundamentally different process principles not only increases the number of process steps, there are also different process requirements that must be fulfilled, and intermediary operations are needed to prepare the work piece for the next process step. This makes the use of AM in combination with a conventional manufacturing system more complex and less attractive for a wider industrial application. This paper presents the development of a more integrated solution to hybrid manufacturing where a metallic powder bed AM machine is combined with a conventional 5-axis CNC milling machine to form a hybrid manufacturing cell.
