  • Viscoelastic properties of polyisobutylene (PIB) - primary sealant in insulating glazing elements
    Gradišar Centa, Urška ...
In the industry of insulating glazing units (IGU) polyisobutylene (PIB) is commonly used as a primary sealant due to its thermoplastic mechanical properties with low water and gas permeability. In ... the present work, viscoelastic properties of two commercially available PIBs were determined over a wide frequency and temperature range. The samples were thermally treated at 180 °C for 10 min which led to irreversible structural changes of PIB. During the thermal treatment, the chemical structure of the PIB changed and the mechanical properties became constant. Due to stable rheological behaviour of heat-treated PIBs, their use in IGUs leads to lower degree of deformation and extended durability of multi-layer glazing elements.
