  • Modal model based vibration-fatigue analysis [Elektronski vir]
Mršnik, Matjaž ; Slavič, Janko, 1978- ; Boltežar, Miha
A complex multi - axial stress response can develop in randomly excited structures and cause fatigue failure. Vibration fatigue analysis is a common approach for calculating the time - to - failure ... estimates in the frequenc y domain, based on structural dynamics. The mathematical tools used are dealing with random processes, dynamic response of the structure, multi - axial stress states and cycle counting methods. It is an elaborate procedure with many layers, where often the i mportant dependencies are not explicitly expressed. Because vibration fatigue is mostly concerned with damage due to structural dynamics, the relationship between the dynamic properties of the model and the damage contribution is critical. Therefore, an at tempt is made to base damage contribution on individual mode, and, in this process, also reduce the numerical complexity of vibration fatigue analysis. Similar approach has been attempted recently by other researchers, although in a different framework. As the formulation in the modal space is achieved, total damage can be thought of as a combination of the damage contributions from different resonant frequencies. This opens up a number of possibilities, e.g. fast structural optimization and straightforward analysis of experimental strain modal models. The analysis gets more elaborate for a general case consisting of multiple modes, but is also more convenient, as separate modes (modal shapes, natural frequencies and modal dampings) of the structure can then be ranked based on their contribution to total damage. A simple FEM model is presented, showcasing a procedure, comprising standard vibration fatigue procedures but based on the calculated modal model. Results are believed to be accurate as the changed fo rmulation is mathematically almost equivalent to the standard approach.
