HELLP syndrome is the severest form of preeclampsia in the mother, characterized by hemolysis, increased levels of liver enzymes and thrombocytopenia. The effects on the fetus/newborn are mainly due ... to prematureseparation of placenta, asphyxia or severe immaturity and associated complications. Intrauterine growth retardation is a frequent consequence. A retrospective analysis involved 43 newborns of 40 mothers who delivered in theperiod 1995-2000 in the Maternity Hospital Ljubljana. We analysed birth weight, gestational age, diseases in the neonatal period, need for intensive, care management and duration of hospital stay. The results are presented as frequency (%) or as means +- standard deviation. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Most pathology found in newborns of mothers with HELLP syndrome resulted from their immaturity. We failed to find-the diagnosis specifically associated with maternal HELLP syndrome. In one third of newborns we found hyaline membrane disease. Signs of general bacterial infection were found in 20% of survived newborns. The incidence of intracranial hemorrhage was low-13,5%. Most newborns were treated at the Neonatal Intensive Care and Therapy Unit; the rates, methods and duration of intensive treatment are comparable to those reported in literature.
