  • Plasma treatment as approach to lower formaldehyde emission from MDF and particleboard
    Medved, Sergej ...
Usage of formaldehyde-based resin for production of wood-based composites results in emission of free or poorly bonded formaldehyde. Due its harmful effect on human health, resin producers, producers ... ofwood-based composites as well as researchers are looking for efficient way to reduce the free formaldehyde emission. Although MDF and particleboards are mostly surfaced with different materials which can also act as formaldehyde barriers, the efficiency of them is also related to the bond established between the substrate and the surfacing material. Since plasma surface treatrnent promotes bonding, we tested the functionality of plasma treatrnent towards lowering of formaldehyde emissions. MDF and particleboard was subjected to non-thermal plasma discharge and afterward surfaced with decorative impregnated paper and HPL. Unsurfaced and surfaced plasma treated panels were tested, alongside equivalent control samples, for formaldehyde emissions by gas analysis (ISO 12460-3: 2008). The test showed a positive impact ofthe plasma treatment. In ali cases lower formaldehyde emissions were seen when compared with the control equivalent.
