  • Exploring language accuracy in a B2 examination
Ilc, Gašper ; Stopar, Andrej, 1976-
The paper examines the relationship between the different subtests of the Slovenian General Matura Examination in English (GME), paying special attention to the dimension of linguistic competence as ... a standard component of language proficiency examinations. The assumption is that if the examination is valid and reliable, high correlations between the subtests and subscales that aim to test linguistic competence can be expected. The findings show that this prediction is only partially confirmed, since only moderate internal correlations exist between the subtest and subscales that target linguistic competences. In addition, moderate to high internal correlation is observed between the reading comprehension and language in use subtests. The analysis confirms a strong relationship between lexical and syntactic knowledge, with the latter also being a good predictor of reading comprehension performance. The findings contribute towards the validation of the current GME test-design with respect to the subtests and tasks that target different linguistic competences. Also, a statistically significant predictive relation between linguistic competences and reading comprehension indicates that a focus on the latter may be beneficial in both assessment and teaching contexts.
