    The misuse of illicit drugs have been spreading in all the regions of Sloveniain last decade and has became an important social, medical and economical problem (1). About 4% of total population ... between 15 and 39 years are regular heroin users which indicates the drug use as exclusively the youthproblem (2). There is a plenty of reasons for a family physician to play more active role in dealing with drug addiction. Some of more important reasons are the following : Addiction also reflects troubles and scrapes of an addict's family at society at all. Addiction is the chronic, non-contagious disease of unhealthy living style. We can speak about an epidemic of illicit drugs addiction. Each and every drug addict represents some sort of disturbance in function of a local community. Every family physician has much more contacts with addicts than clinicians do. In the firstpart of this presentation author presents a Centre for Prevention and Treating Illicit Drug Addiction, located in rural Primary Health Centre near the south Slovenian border. A case report of misdiagnosed heroin addiction in teenage girl is presented in the second part. Prevention and early detection of illicit drugs abuse are both great challenge and opportunity for family physician. Success in dealing with dependence to both illicit and legal drugs could prospectively become an important criteria in quality assess ment of each individual general practice at all.
