Rising antibiotic resistance rates among bacterial pathogens has become a worldwide ... problem. Widespread use of certain antibiotics for human and animal treatment, for prophylaxis and growth promotion in animals has been shown to select resistant bacteria. Bacteria andgenes, including resistance genes, can pass among human, animal and other ecosystems. Resistance can be selected in both pathogenic zoonotic bacteria like Salmonella spp., Campylobacter spp., and E.coli 0157 and other exposed bacteria (enterococci), with resulting adverse consequences for the preventionand treatment of diseases in humans. Because of the global increasing of antimicrobial resistance and the potential public health consequences of the transmission of resistant bacteria through the food chain there is an urgent need for monitoring antimicrobial resistance at the local, regional and international level.
