    Anžič, Jožica, zdravnica
More than 70% of children with cancer experience severe pain at some point their illness. They suffer pain caused by cancer itself, by treatment and its complications, by diagnostic and therapeutic ... procedures, as well as from unrelated causes. Mechanisms of pain in childhood are not different from thosein adults. Experience of pain and reactions to painful stimuli unddergo developmental changes that pose barriers to recognition and assessment of painin a child. Frequently, children with cancer suffer from different pains, and they have other problems due to malignancy. These factors tend to increaseexperience of pain. Pain recognition is necessary for a choiceof adequate treatment modalities and to assess effectiveness of pain interventions. Pain management combines drugs and non-pharmacological measures. The choice of correct pain treatment modalities takes into account pain intensity, and other dimensions of pain, as well as the childs biological, psychosocial and individual needs. Both, the family and the child itself must be involved in decision-making about therapy. Health care workers have to feel empathy for the child and his or her family. They must have special knowledge about pain, as well as special skills for pain control
