ǂThe ǂaim of the paper is to present a group of maraging steels and their application to manufacture of vital parts of die-casting tools. Mechanical and technological properties of the maraging ... steels are a result of fundamental reactions in the material. Characteristic procedures to improve material properties by heat treatment are described. A characteristic chemical composition and microstructure of these steels and their influence on steel properties are described. The maraging steels are usually delivered in the quenched state, in which they are soft and suitable for various machining processes. A heat treatment process, i.e. precipitation hardening, follows after machining. This process produces microscopic precipitation of solid phases which contribute to increase in steel hardness and strength. For our testing of heat treatment and impact toughness a maraging steel of Thyssen, known under commercial name of Thyrodur 2709, was selected. The paper indicates influences of different aging conditions on microstructure and hardness. Impact toughness tests at a temperature of specimens of 220°C, which is an average temperature measured at the engraving surface of die-casting tools, were made too.
