    Selection of an appropriate flowmeter for fluid flow measurement is a demanding decision-making task due to numureous parameters affecting the selection and increasing number of flowmeters available ... on the market. To assist in this procedure, guidelines and handbooks were compiled, standards established and computer programs implemented. However, most of the existing software is either at a prototype stage with very limited capabilities or closely related to a particular flowmeter producer. We have designed an expert system for flowmeter selection that incorporates an extensive producer-independent knowledge base on flowmeters and supports transparency of the selection. The paper gives an overview of the related work and presents the developed system, emphasizing parameter processing and distance-based reasoning in the flowmeter selection procedure.
