    Fluid flow measurement is probably the most important among all process measurements. However, selection of an appropriate flowmeter for a particular application is a difficult task. Since numerous ... types of flowmeters exist and huge amount of knowledge about their characteristics is available, flowmeter selection could be effectively supported by a knowledge-based computer program. We have designed an expert system for flowmeter selection that includes a knowledge base on 14 different types of flowmeters with around 40 variables involved. We present the flowmeter selection procedure, the knowledge base, system implementation and its evaluation.
